anyone know the stock weight of a 3.8 with no one in it?
I've found between 3,306 - 3,331 for the 3.8L coupe, depending on which year ('96-'02) and what source. Most sources I've found don't list differences for things like auto v. manual, t-tops v. hard top, power v. non-power accessories, etc. so I'm sure the numbers could be off by more than the 25 lbs.
what year is your car? mines an 02. from around 40 + (mph) is when it really picks up. in the higher rpms the car sounds like its flying, but its not really going anywhere bc its so heavy. once again my cars basically stock. thats why i call it "the fastest slowest car" lol idk i cant even describe it that well its like fast but not fast at the same time. i see the power and potential of the 3.8 engine, and i see me not really going anywhere just, the car sounding mean. its kinda like a bark with not much bite. but at higher rpms its got a pretty good bite for a v6 carrying all that weight. i cant wait to reduce alot of this weight i wanna see its potential cause it really does have it.
You guys should check out some of the newer V6 cars then: when my brother's g/f had her Xtera totaled earlier this year, they had to get a rental while they were looking for a replacement. They ended up renting an '07 Charger with the V6 & auto, and of course being brothers we couldn't help ourselves. I only had the Camaro about 2 months at that time, and hadn't really gotten the chance to play with it yet, but when we both were leaving my mom's house at the same time one evening we got the chance. That Charger walked the Camaro from around 20 up to 65-70 when we had to back off for upcoming traffic. It wasn't a huge difference, but it was definitely walking away.
She eventually bought an '05 Mustang, again with the V6 & auto: I haven't had the chance to run him in that one yet (I don't think she let's him drive it much - smart girl), but she did let me test drive it right after she bought it and I think it is every bit the equal of the Camaro.
Oh, and right before I bought my Camaro I test drove an '03 Mustang with the manual trans - keeping in mind I was looking for a car to build into a road-race car - and while I didn't like the feel of the 'stang as far as handling, I tend to believe it is really close to the Camaro in straight-line performance.
thats why i established 02 and before, the new 09 camaro has an option called the camaro BLACK, has a 300 horse 3.6 liter, the new 350z has a 332hp 3.5 liter. New v-6 are bad!

With my set-up, the car doesnt' really come alive till around 3200 or so; anything below that and it's hard to tell the car's pickin up speed :P. Get above that and it really throws ya back into the seats!
I race my car at lower speeds, I prefer a dig. With the a4 my car launches pretty well from a slow roll (10 or less), 25mph, and between 45-55. At all those speeds my tach is usually around 2k or higher. I raced from a 35mph roll once, it just switched gears and the tach was at 1.2k, i punched it, but my car was like GTFO, took forever to get going
Back when the 3.8 was introduced to the F-Body it was an engine that produced a lot at that time. It's enough for me, thats why I bought a Z28, haha.
it is...I mean...mid 1995, how many vehicles for 14g's could you buy brand new, that looked sleek (and still is ahead of its time) that also had 200 horsies sitting on tap?
made a right hand turn onto the highway today and just felt like gunning it to 75. they dont pick up too well in low rpms which is somthing i hate about them. the tourque isnt too great. but when these 3.8s get in higher rpms these things move! i mean they really have potential i just wish they weren't so damn heavy! btw mines an 02 3.8 a4 camaro. my cars basically stock just a 160 degree thermo and a k & n airfilter. iam impressed with the 160 degree thermo bc my car doesnt even get over 190 degrees just with putting in the thermo still havn't gotten the manual fanswitch. it used to get up to 210 or more very quickly when i had the stock 195 degree thermo. if these cars weren't so damn heavy and came with higher gears they would be pretty damn quick stock.
Funny, I would have said the exact opposite about 3.8's. They have enough torque down low to get going decently, but they have absolutely no high end power.
I'm guessing your v6 camaro is the fastest car youve driven since youre saying it feels like it has lots of top end. And I don't mean that as an insult, but once you drive something that actually has some top end power, when you go back to the 3.8 youll be really disapointed at the high rpm power.
Thats why 3.73's or biggger gears and a cam really wakes the 3.8 up, plus weight reduction, You'll have low end with the gears, and top end with the right cam at 2500-3000 rpms and up.
