  • Upgrading OS

I'm running XP Pro, but I need a 64 bit OS. My choices are XP 64 or Vista 64 and wanted to get peoples opinions on them. Whatcha think?

    Re: Upgrading OS

I voted for XP. Microsoft is giving up on Vista and focusing on 7 right now. So there's more support and software geared toward XP than Vista currently.

My vote is XP, because, like pace said, even though vista is the most recently released OS, it's not microsofts main focus right now. Although I surely don't hate vista as many people claim, but I've run into lots of compatibility issues with my vista 64 bit. Vista itself doesn't support nearly as much as XP, the 64 bit just adds to that.

However, if you're sticking to new release softwares and newer hardware components, it really shouldn't be much of a problem for you, I do like the user interface of vista over XP, once the administrator prompts are bypassed.

IIRC they just released a beta of windows 7, so if you can wait a while, it might be worth it, depending on how they handle it.

edit: Or check out the beta version, looks like it's available for download on the Microsoft website as of today.

The only problem is my scanner. Canon has a 64 bit Vista driver, but they will not support XP64, So if I go XP, I'll loose the scanner.

I just bought a new Dell XPS last summer and it came with Vista Home Premium. I actually like it. I guess I'll be the only Vista-voter here

You can disable most of the Graphic hogs in Vista an make it run much faster. It won't look like Vista anymore but you will still have the other benefits of Vista.

The bottom line is having stout enough hardware to support Vista. The requirements listed by Microsoft are only enough to barley run it. My XPS laptop came with Vista and even thou I like it, I don't think I would put Vista on my XPS desktop that came with XP and is Vista capable according to Dell. Vista SP1 is a great improvement over the original release. It's also important to make sure you have the newest drivers when running Vista. The early drivers were very slow.

My Toshiba laptop has Vista Home Premium and and I have not had any issues with it. Works great, and it is certainly fast enough for my needs.

I'll upgrade to vista in about 2-3 years.

I don't think you guys are going to get that opportunity. I have a feeling that Windows 7 will just take the place of Vista. Even though I have not had major issues with Vista, it looks like Microsoft is putting all of their eggs in the Windows 7 basket and putting Vista out to pasture...

Windows 7 will be interesting. My Toshiba laptop with Vista is 2 years old now, so the good news is that by the time Windows 7 is tested and released with most of the bugs worked out it will be time to buy a new laptop...

that's pretty much taken care of since the release of SP1. Whoever has upgraded to SP1 and still has issues running the system cant blame Vista, comes down to their machine/drivers (SP2 promises to fix nearly all common driver issues :D). my Vista Basic machine is just as fast as XP SP3 (after some elementary service tweaks), i was set to give up on the OS until i upgraded the service pack...SP2 is due in April, cant wait to see what it'll do for my system.

Windows 7 is also looking very promising, but Vista will in no way be put out to pasture. After all, Windows 7 is, by Microsoft's own admission, heavily Vista-based and mostly a Vista revamp. heck, the Windows 7 early beta's were actually re-builds of Vista's platform. (Vista-build 6000; Vista SP1-build 6001; Windows 7 early beta-build 68xx), i'd love to test out Build 7000 though

ah, screw it, just go the easy route and dual boot Vista and Linux :D

This is what I'm talking about; most people aren't very computer literate, will go out and buy a comp that says is Vista capable, and run Vista on it. Get the updates and it'll still run like **** compared to XP Pro. I took my aunt's laptop and upped the Ram from 512 to 2G, and Vista still is at idle using 60% of that.....she doesn't want me to me to go in and start tweaking :(

My mom bought her mom a HP desktop with Vista Home on it; it hasn't been bad since I put SP2 on it, but it's still fairly slow IMO.

SP2's still in the beta stage, the final release due in April should help alot with the resource-hogging-ness (?)
