American cars had severe reliability problems in the 80's. Detriot could not build a decent 4-bang to save their companies. Although that has changed, the perception never left.
I hear these comments all the time at the race track and car shows.
My beater is not American because Detroit is adverse to mounting a manual to a v6 in a sedan. Why?

aw come on, you're forgetting about the iron duke
but yeah, if they didnt try to go cheap to make more money in the 80's they wouldnt even be in this problem now
instead of focusing on quality, they started focusing on quantity, and cheapening parts, for instance chrysler decided to start using plastic in their transmissions.. and take a look at them, i dont know any late 80's to early 00's transmissions that havent failed
yea thats why my parents dont like american cars that much (ironic thats all we own) anymore, but then again my dad doesnt maintain his cars and basically waits till he gets a light or it breaks down, then he calls it a piece of junk. Thats why i banned him from my car, and i tell him he needs to take care of his or this will just keep happening. I think this train of thought has led sales down for domestics and bigger sales for foreign, they profit and then are able to commercialize more because of that more people watch/see their ads and buy into wanting those cars. Since most people just buy for looks and dont do research on cars its the commercials that get them. Have you noticed how pointless commercials have gotten? the commercial has nothing to do with the car.
i dont see how it could be the looks because if you ask me other than the sport cars all the regular sedans and coupes jap. american. german look the same now a days. theirs no real appeal in any of the new cars anymore they all mostly have the same egg shape tops with very few defining accents i only like the sporty ones like the camaro, vette ect. i dont see any desire at all to drive jap cars i dont know how anyone fits comfortably in them either ther so cramped i feel they were made for small people.
hi,
I am living in the Netherlands (Europe) and i have a 2001 3.8V6 Camaro, and a 2001 2.4 Oldsmobile (Chevrolet in Europe) Alero.
I have had 7 years a 1971 Camaro (which i restored complete and sold her 2 years ago.) and a Chevrolet Corsica 2.2 and a Dodge (Chrysler in Europe) neon.
The problem with American cars in Europe is, most people still thinks that American cars uses a lot of fuel (i think that is nonsens, my Alero and my 2001 camaro don't use a lot of fuel, and the Corsica and Neon didn't either). But the main problem is most big cars in europe are company cars.
A lot of people drive a big car (that belongs to the company) for 3 years, after that the car will be replaced by a new one, most of the big cars are from BMW, Volkswagen or Mercedes or Toyota, these cars are when they are three years old, still wearth a lot of money, and that is the main problem with american cars, when you trade in an American car, the value after 3 or 4 years is not much anymore.
Personally, when i want to trade in my Alero, most of the dealers (Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan etc.) don't want this car.
Hopely this explains something (iam sorry for my bad english).
