    Re: goodbye pontiac

I think they should do the folowing:

    1. Keep Chevy as the entry level (working mans car)
    2. Keep Cadillac (but dont build Caddy SUVs and Trucks anymore)
    3. Keep Pontiac and build only sports (excitement) cars - would be cool to rebadge Camaro as Firebird and drop camaro from Chevy line
    4. Keep Buick as midlevel cars
    5. Drop GMC ---- redundant to Chevy trucks
    5. Drop Saturn --- in the works
    6. Drop Saab --- in the works
    7. Drop Hummer --- in the works

Need to get back to Chevy's being Chevy's and Ponitiacs being Pontiacs (instead of rebadged Chevys......that would mean dropping some models...but it needs o be done.

I think when Saturn first came out they were independant from GM. They didn't share GM parts. THey were successful.

But yeah, I think bankrupcy is the best route for them.
        1) Holden is a part of GM, so they can't "buy off Pontiac".

        2) Saturn was successful as a name-recognition thing, but wasn't really profitable for its life.

        3) There's a move to make Saturn truly independent - e.g. sell it off to its dealers.

That said, I'm interested in what GM is going to do with Pontiac. I mean, The Opel Insignia was due to come over (probably originally slated to replace the Aura) - but it'd now probably do well as the new G6 - especially with the XWD system from the Saab 9-3. I tell you, if you do it right w/ the turbo DI 4-cylinder, you could have a GM-sourced Evo-killer.

And a sporty image is EXACTLY what Pontiac needs to differentiate it from Chevy.

yeah, there is no way that would ever happen.

chevy as a MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger fanbase and loyalty to their cars, im sorry but i would buy a new camaro, but i would never buy a new firebird.

came with a pontiac corvette... not to piss you pontiac guys off.

chevy is the highest selling gm brand and has always been that way.. turning them into entry level cars would totally destroy gm and the chevy reputation which would put them into further debt

            GM Restruction

quote " In its 39-page "Restructuring Plan for Long-Term Liability" submitted to the House of Rep Financial Services Committee, GM announced its intentions to cope with "the worst economic downturn and credit market conditions since the Great Depression." The failures in America's financial sector, including in investment banks and insurance companies, has put a strain on GMAC (GM's financing arm) in particular, making it less able to finance the purchase of new autos. In order to right the ship, GM has asked the House for up to $10 billion (think this is supposed to be million but says billion in article) a month in temporary loans, totaling up to $18 billion.
The restructuring plan, to insure this doesn't happen again, includes reducing the number of brands, nameplates and retail outlets as well as changes in wages and benefits (to be competitive with foreign markets), remanufacturing and structural cost reductions, and a commitment to building smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Hummer, Saab and Saturn look to be up for sale in the near future. Meanwhile, they are hoping to keep Buick and Pontiac alive through consolidating the dealer network with GMC. Even the executives are taking a pay cut, and look for several extemely rare prizes from GM Heritage Collection to be on sale at the Barret Jackson auction. The good news is that we have yet to hear one threat to our beloved performance division that is churning out the new Camaros, Corvettes, and G8's.

I just wanted to share this information with everyone it was listed in an article in my GM High-Tech book.

Hate to break it to you, but selling entry-level is exactly what Chevy is - and what makes it the volume leader for GM. Chevy-Cadillac is the same as Toyota-Lexus. Now I'd say it's time to make Pontiac like Scion - aimed at the youth market - though that sub-division of Toyota's not doing as well lately.

Nope, that really does mean billions...a few million wouldn't be much more than a drop in the bucket at this point.
