^LOL at that.^ i always use ac delco on my camaro because i think the blue looks cool and they cost a whole $3. On everything else i just use a fram filter. The only difference between k&n oil filters and fram is about 6 bucks.
thats insane, i could rebuild the engine in a short time, but not take it out.. although i have never taken an engine out of a 4th gen before
It is easier to take it out to rebuild the engine, esp. on a lift you can drop it pretty quick from the bottom and put it on a stand and also hone the cylinders out. Worked well for me 45,000 miles later and almost 7 years no problems, this is with 4 years running 8-10 PSI and almost 3 years with a 125 nitrous shot. Now will be a turbo kit here soon.
i would break it in with some dino oil, then switch to synthetic.. but thats just a personal preference.. the only real break-in needed for a roller cam engine is to put a load on it to seat the rings, and do a few quick oil changes to get the metal particles out
After a rebuild I would put some oil in it to flush any stuff that might have fallen in so the oil pickup doesn't pick up any debris or metal. Then I put the good stuff in RP 20/50. and a Bosch oil filter which I really like with a magnet on the end and a magnetic drain plug. I'm tapping my oil pan pretty soon for a -10an return line so I'll be flushing my oil out once again. But I'm waiting until I'm close to my oil change so I don't waste $44 on a oil change.

AC Delco is a good brand also I picked up 3 of the extended filters and use Bosch extended filters, I just look at oil filter comparisons and I think fram came in last so I'd rather spend the extra $2-$4 and get the better extra long filters so my $4000 engine will last longer.

The mechanic that did a total rebuild on my with bigger cam and forged pistons,l32 rods, clev. 77 bearings etc. did it in 8 hours, taking it out of the car, and putting it back in. He has his own track car he races on the weekends so he quick on rebuilds. That is using a lift though too. great job on yours I know it would take me a week or 2 to do what you just did. Any upgrade mods done to it? Or a stock replacement , I can see the springs, did you you get the modded retainers for them I hope?
damn thats fast as hell!!
well i have bad news. regarding the springs...i got the modded retainers in today and was putting them on and guess what...
yeah, thats a valve stem seal and half of a guide. now i have to pull the heads back off and have new guides put in. IM SO ANGRY!

what real performance gains or 0.001 seconds of a quarter mile time r u gonna get from buying a more expensive one?
what intake is that flamin? and i just did my engine too takin it out the top, man that was a pain but what with the lack of space and all, was my only choice. what headers r those? and lastly im using the same fram oil filter and water pump
the intake is stock, just made pretty. i saw 97rs intake and valve covers and just had to have them, so i mimicked it.
headers are pacesetters.

I'm having a flashback from my build 6 years ago. I had the exact same thing happen except, it happened when I drove the car about 100 miles, started smoking like hell , so I took it back and he popped the drivers side valve cover and the #1 valve gude snapped off, he had an extra buick head from a 3.8 so he just gave me that and didn't charge me for labor. I had the heads milled and checked too, prior to putting them on. Really pissed me off. Good luck on it, glad you found it before the motor was in. Now you'll have my good luck with a monster engine that takes boost and nitrous and sh!ts lighting out of its tail pipes.LOL Bobby was the fastest machanic I ever saw with doing everythng right, it was because of he had a 1500hp dirt car he raced and worked on , they would have to pull it apart to check stuff inbetween runs etc. on the weekends and stuff, he was so use to my car the last tranny he changed we I broke 3rd gear he had mine out and the new one in and we were bleeding the clutch in an hour, with smoke breaks.LOL He said he could do a lower intake manifold change on a 00' 3.4 Grand Am in 45 minutes start to finish. It took me 4 days about 30 hours total since I never worked on the 00' grand am 3.4 before, but I did it and it worked fine, no problems so I was happy an so was the wife, then traded it for a 07 3.5 Vue. But I would also check the other head if you didn't already because when one goes then their might be more in the future. Are your 98+ heads or pre? Pre 98' has that problem , my was a 96' head the 98+ are suppose to be stronger , thats why I have 02' spare set ready to install in mine when they go. Good luck again, sorry I got off track.
