so im not computer literate really, i know things, but not much. so i bought this video card of e-bay, Nvidia fx5500, and it didnt come with a disc. i went to the nvidia website and downloaded the drivers, booted up in safe mode (cause i guess the resolution was too much and it wouldnt display normal) and installed the drivers. rebooted and it works, everything is just huge! and i have it set on the lowest resolution. like 800x600. can anyone help me get it smaller!

Assuming your using XP as most do; Right click in an open area on the desktop. Click properties. Click the settings tab. There will be a screen resolution area with a slider, adjust it to at least 1024 x 768...

Lower resolutions means less pixels for your computer to play with. If your icons were to be the same literal size in the 800x600 resolution as they are in the 1024x768 they would be damn near unreadable.

And to prove his point, take a look at the very large monitors/LCD/Plasma screens and notice how they get more "pixelized" the larger they are.

Yeah, right click the desktop, go to settings tab, and drag the slider to the right a notch or two.

This may not be possible, however. I've noticed with my old graphics card that is now on a buddies computer (fx5200) the newest drivers don't work properly on the computer. I had to use an older version on the drivers (somewhere around 70.xxx range, I think they are well in the hundreds now). They are still available and might show up in google if you type nvidia fx5500 drivers.

when i do that, the screen goes black, then comes back and everything is SUPER huge, and the bar says that the resolution is at like600x400, and then when i take it to 800x600 it gets smaller, but wont actaully go to the 1000x700

thats what i did. i used the on board graphics to go to the nvidia site and download the drivers cause when i just put the card in the screen would go black. which is why i had to boot in safe mode, so that my pooter would find the new hardware and i could install the drivers and see what i was doing. could i have downloaded the wrong driver?

I say let it crash, then hit it with an axe. Computers just suck sometimes.

It is possible that you downloaded the wrong driver. But I suspect that its conflicting with the onboard video. Go into the BIOS and either turn off the onboard or change it to what you have Ex, AGP PCI PCIe (depends on BIOS). Lets do this latter.

Go into "Device Manager" and see if your card is actually installed (you will see here if you have the wrong driver). Right click on "My Computer" then click "properties". Click "Hardware" tab and then "Device Manager". Check under display adapters to see if its there.

Post up and let me know if you see it in the Device manager or if it has any errors.

But what I was getting at is that the drivers off the nVidia website don't work properly with their older cards (with my 5200 anyway) even if you select it as the model and download from there. You need to download an older version of the drivers for the card because there are compatibility issues with the new drivers on the older cards.

I believe this is the version I used and it worked for my 5200. v91.xxx

I just checked the nVidia website and they say to download the 175.xxx version drivers, but they acted the same as you are describing on the computer I recently installed it in.
