  • something to wish for

    hey everyone,

for as long as i can remember, i've enjoyed going fast(no, not like Ricky Bobby.) i'm sure i'm not the only one here on the forum that feels that way. the problem is that where i live, there is no place you can go to test the endurance of your car(or your skills as a driver.) even though i live less than 3 hours from Talladega Superspeedway, i can't find a place to LEGALLY take my car to the extreme limits i feel it should be able to handle. i, like a few others on here, do not like street racing, and i certainly do not condone it. therefore, i refuse to give in to little honda civics and race on the highways. i recently found out that the only place that was left to go has been dismantled and destroyed, so i give a belated farewell the the Birmingham International Raceway. i've thought about joining the SCCA, but can't find a way to register or even a person to talk to about it. at least then i could discuss the possibility of road course racing at the Barber Motorsports Complex. granted, i am a NASCAR fan, and that's the kind of racing i like, but there is no place to even take a street car that's prepped by it's owner to just run the hell out of it(even for a nominal fee.) all that's left is dirt tracks. and just about every one of those are to small to even think about getting any good speed out of. i know i can't be the only person that feels this way................

Try NASA racing. They are getting popular and growing. They have all sorts of division that you can enter your car in.

The only thing is you drive at your own risk.

Speedingturtle, you need to look into what is known as High Performance Driving Events (HPDE). Most any road course will have them throughout the year and the way it works is you sign up for the event through a group or club which rents out the track for the weekend. You do not have to be a member of any group usually, just pay the fee and have your car inspected for safety items and you're good to go. It's the best way to start off driving on a track as you will be taught how to drive.

                Wikipedia link for HPDE

BMWCCA (BMW Car Club of America) or PCA (Porsche Club of America) are good ones to run with and are at Barber Motorsports Park it seems.
