  • Tougher emission standard across the country

Pretty soon you guys will be just like me by 2016. You'll have a hard time trying to modify your car because of emission standard.

    ---------------------

The Obama administration today plans to propose tough standards for tailpipe emissions from new automobiles, establishing the first nationwide regulation for greenhouse gases.

It will also raise fuel efficiency targets to 35.5 miles per gallon for new passenger vehicles and light trucks by 2016, four years earlier than required under the 2007 energy bill, sources close to the administration said.

The measures are significant steps forward for the administration's energy agenda by cutting greenhouse-gas emissions that contribute to climate change and by easing U.S. dependence on oil, most of which is imported.

The administration is embracing standards stringent enough to satisfy the state of California, which has been fighting for a waiver from federal law so that it could set its own guidelines, sources said. Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.) and Jennifer M. Granholm (D-Mich.) will be among a variety of state and industry officials who plan to attend an announcement today, according to sources close to the administration

I have an 88 pickup that's getting harder to pass. Just this month alone I spent $550 to have the OB2 cat installed and take the emission test again.

The guy who did my emission said that the DMV in my county would help me get rid of my car and give me cash for it. I said yeah right!!!

It used to be cars that are 10 years and older are exempt, then it went to 20 years, and now it's 30 years. ACLU in my neck of the woods are fighting for tougher emission for older car and wanted to throw away the exemption rule.

We've been lucky here in Wisconsin (for now). For most cars, all they do is scan for codes; no codes - you pass. No visual inspection, and it's every other year (even model years, tested odd years, odd model years, tested even years).

The cut off year is '93 - no test.

they can try all they want, but that rule wont ever go. you cant make old cars meet new standards plain and simple. i know my car wont right now, hell it barely passed the old test (i was .003 from failing the carbon test a few years ago when we had testing lol) it sure as hell wont after this winter. ohio ditched it because its a waste of money. we dont have smog or bad air. hell all we have is open space and corn.

the very first sentence in the article that you linked specifically says

If this does come to pass, anyone on this site missed that deadline by at least 14 years

That's true, but if the standard is to follow Calif. you'll have a hard time modding your car. For those of you that run your car without a cat then you would be required to get one.

And people why the heck F bodies ever had 4 cylinder engines - they were built to help meet CAFE standards.

Pretty soon, anything more than a three cylinder engine will be considered a "big block."
