This thread is a dedication to those that have fought and died for this country... for without those brave warriors we would not be the nation we are today...

    In Flanders Fields
    by John McCrae, 1915.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

    We are the Dead.
    Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

              Re: Memorial Day

A federal law passed in 2000 calls on Americans to stop for one minute at three o'clock local time on Memorial Day. The National Moment of Remembrance honors the members of the armed forces and others who have died in service to America.

The National Moment of Remembrance is not intended to take the place of the more traditional Memorial Day events that are observed at cemeteries, parks and veterans memorials. Instead it is meant to be an act of unity for the entire nation. Through a common moment of silence we can reclaim Memorial Day as the revered and dignified holiday it was meant to be. By participating, we can reconnect with one another as Americans.

There are few Americans who have not been touched by a story of sacrifice, or an act of courage or patriotism by a member of our armed forces. Often it is a family member or an acquaintance. Sometimes it is chronicled in a book or told in a story or a song. In America’s brief history there have been more than 665,000 men and women who have died in many theaters of operation throughout the world, with new deaths occurring even now as we remain in battle against the forces of terror. It is for these brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice that we should take a moment to remember their courage and commitment. Their personal sacrifices were made to protect our liberty and freedom here at home, and to bring democracy to millions more around the world.

While we pray for peace and enjoy time with our family and friends this weekend, let us also pause at 3:00 p.m. on today to put the "Memorial" back into Memorial Day and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom and liberty we all cherish today.
