    Hey guys,

I am going to see my buddies ls1 camaro tommorrow, I think it is a 2001-2002. It was his uncles who has passed on and now his family has the car. I know it has a fair bit of work done to it, and it is supercharged...He tells me that the car will overheat when it sits in traffic, but is fine as long as he is driving. It also apparently wont pass emissions.

I was just wondering what I could/should look for as far as the overheating part goes...I know emissions wise to look for all emissions equip, and I am going to scan it with hp tuners. But what could cause it to overheat when just idling?

I know this isnt a forum for ls1's so thats why I put it in the lounge, and I know some guys on here own them...

    Thanks.

First thing to check on the overheating would be to make sure it is full of antifreeze of course, then take a look at the fan settings with your tuner.

is there a ballpark figure for what those fans should be set at? I was also going to check for oil and crap in the coolant.

I was thinking that because this is like an 11 second camaro that it may also have a smaller resovoir for the coolant...I dunno...all I know is the car was not street driven very much, and they are trying to get it back on the road more often now...

Fans not kicking on at idle or fan motor bad or relay/fuse, check radiator fluid like stated. Fans should kick on around 210-220 but you can turn the A/C on to kick them on or use VCM feature on Hptuners to turn lows on and make sure both work and then highs on. Also check in front of the radiator to make sure their is no junk build up on it or plastic bags. I know I'm putting in a 3 core 2" think bigger radiator and a 1qt. resovoir. The fans are probably retuned to come on early or might have a fan switch. If a fan switch and they are using the A/C it needs to be on high to cool the engine. Also make sure the air dam is on the car. Thats about all I can think of.

You need to park that *****. You over heat an ls1 one time and you can use that engine as a nice paperweight.

I know that...they havent let it overheat to red yet...but they pull off because it begins to overheat and we are trying to find the problem...

                since it IS supercharged.

the timing would have HAD to be changed for the added torgue on the engine and added power.

if the timing is too advanced OVERheating is very easy to do.

check the thermostat. and the coolant temp sensor.

thats usually the most common issue.

                but then again.

since the engine has been modded.

the timing could be messed up.

WHICH would also play a role in the engine the passing emissions

I do believe that the car was professionally tuned...we are just not sure where. Im really just scanning to see what I can find...I doubt it is an issue with the tune though...I'll know more when I go look at it tommorrow

It is not something as simple as the water pump?

I'll take a look at that as well...how can you tell if your pump is on the way out by the way?

I also had the thought cross my mind that it could be an electric water pump and they are unaware of a switch for it...

                        Re: ls1 camaro issue

update on this...I finally got my hands on the car last night for a bit...supercharger piping on the bottom fell off and caused to car to buck and stall because the maf was getting a reading, and I guess it was not tuned for a maf failure....

They say it drives fine more or less as long as you don't turn the a/c on...when you turn the a/c on then it overheats...what do you think could cause that...I still havent had a chance to get the scanner on it yet...but I find it weird that the a/c would make it overheat...

You can tell the pump may be going bad by grabbing the pulley and trying to shake it, that and looking around the gasket for leaks. A water pump really isn't that complicated of a part, but that would be my best guess. If you can shake the pump pulley, then its starting to go bad.

do I need to take the belt off for it?...I think he has an electric waterpump I am not sure...there is a switch under the hood that is there to cool the car down...they said it was for the fans though...I can't see how just turning on the fans would cool everything down...

i had trouble with my bird overheating once, i replaced everything, radiator, hoses, thermostat, everything but a waterpump. the pully had no play, and no leaking around the gasket/weep hole. when i pulled it off, there were no fins left on the pump itself...it can look good from the outside, but be bad on the inside.

does it have an electric one on it?
