  • So I got to see a wreck up close....

So a week ago today, we were driving back home after a week at Myrtle Beach, SC. Since I had the GPS (installed in the cubby of my G8), I was the lead car. My brother-in-law was asleep in the passenger seat, and my wife and the rest of her family are in the 04 Grand Prix about 6 cars back in traffic. We're communicating with a couple Cobra 2-way walkies.

The traffic was flowing along around 70 in the slow lane. There was a maroon Monte Carlo immediately ahead of me. The other driver's around us were doing a good job of keeping a safe distance; and we're probably about 4.5 car lengths behind the Monte. I was about to make my move into the passing lane, since I was getting too close to the car ahead. The passing lane had a bit more stacked up traffic though; they were trailing behind a semi that was passing the Monte Carlo.

I checked my mirrors and blind spot for the change and as I glance forward again, the Monte Carlo and the Semi touch. I don't know who was at fault.... If the semi driver thought he was clear and cut over, or if the Monte driver was trying to make a move. I don't remember anything being in front of him so who knows. All I know is that the truck and the Monte were both right on the center white dotted line.

At this point I was in around 3.5 car lengths and had my foot resting on the brake. This may have been what helped with the reaction time. Anyways, the two touched and the Monte Carlo went for a ride. First thing that happened was the back end of his car fishtailed into the passing lane. I had the walkie-talkie in hand and was on the brakes hard. I warned the other car traveling with us with something along the lines of "wreck wreck wreck, we've got a wreck". The hard braking and shouting on the walkie startled my bro-in-law awake. He woke up in time to see the rest.

The first thing his eyes saw was the Monte sliding sideways toward the gaurdrail in the passing lane. Then the car somehow managed to go exactly perpindicular to the lane, which kept him off the gaurdrail. At this point, we're grinding the brakes and aimed right at his passenger side. The momentum of his car then caused the front (in our lane) to angle back toward our gaurdrail. Then finally the back end loses all traction and just whips completely back around into our lane.

Now we've got our speed down to like 20mph. His car finally comes to a complete stop facing oncoming traffic (that's me, and the line of cars bearing down on us) in our lane. The whole time all this is happening, I'm still warning them on the walkie (cause all the have seen is brake lights), keeping an eye on the rearview mirror to avoid getting hit, and manage to get into the passing lane just as his car comes to a stop in front of where we would have been.

Dude got lucky, somebody was watchin after him (and us). That whole thing coulda been alot worse. I know I was gettin way to close, but he (and I) were also lucky that I was able to react as quick as I did.

Oh, my bro-in-law needed to change his pants afterward.... lol.

Lol yeah. It wasn't actually in Myrtle. Yeah, they can't drive down there, they're all tourists that don't pay attention to anything. My best guess for the location of the wreck is I77 North, between Mt. Airy, NC and Wytheville, VA. After the wreck happened, the earlier part of the trip kinda blurred. It seems like it happened somewhere a half dozen miles before where this video picks up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBSBeNnMb2M (not my video btw).

I remember because right after the wreck happened, we had a like five mintues of driving before traffic came to another stop. When we stopped, I checked the GPS and we had 3.4 miles to our next action on the map. If you watch that video, you'll see an exit at the 41 second mark, then the highway necks down to one lane at the 1:23 mark. Then it dumps you right back into another existing highway system at the 1:53 mark. After we got past there, the GPS changed to it's next turn on the map.

This stupid setup causes delays every year we travel this route. And when you get up there past that exit, and get in a single file line, the traffic dissapears and everybody is back up to speed again..... like there was nothing there. It would be nice if they put in another lane somehow, or warned the idiots a bit sooner about the lanes merging together....

Meh, couldn't tell much about the damage. He hit his driver front fender on the truck. When we went by, his passenger side front door was beside my passenger side front door. Lol. Didn't look like it woulda been to bad. Little cosmetic, maybe a cracked wheel or something, and probably some really beat up tires from sliding so far sideways.

Didn't say it was a mac truck, they said it was a semi. And why do you hate them? That's how your car that you are driving got to a dealer so it could be sold and you could be driving it. Truck drivers are the most safest drivers out there. 90% of the time that they get into an accident is b/c of the fault of the little car that drove into the side of them. I am not a truck driver, but I will defend them in any way that I can if they are not at fault.

Let's see, no trucks or truck drivers, no food on the shelfs at your local grocery store.

my dad is a truck driver, and has been for over thirty years. so far as i know, he's never been in an at fault accident.... as for the beginning of the post, silvachris, that's an awesome story. too bad about the monte though. i've seen something similar to that here in alabama on I-65. some little toyota tried to move in front of a semi and got spun from one side of the interstate to the other.... the truck driver swerved after the car hit him, but he kept it together and got it stopped in the breakdown lane. the only damage i saw on the yota was the left rear quarter panel was crumpled up a little, and probably flat spotted his tires from sliding sideways. no other cars involved, and i was probably 20 yards from the accident as it occured.

Lol, calm down man. Some people just have a huge apprehension for driving near large vehicles that take up all of the lane they're given. Most truck drivers are really good, but you can't forget the first time (or the second) that a trucker tries to cut into your lane while you're there. Blind spots suck!
I don't like mind around rigs, but I have met a couple of them on the Tail of the Dragon (Deals Gap)... youtube "Trucks on the Dragon". Even the best drivers are going to be in both lanes there

Yeah man, it was crazy to have it all unfold right in front of us. I swear I wish we were running a camera. That would have made great footage...
