  • I just can't let go of the firebird

So I know I haven't posted on here in forever, well since I let some water get sucked down my intake which turned out to be no big deal.

Anyway my firebird is sitting at around 135k miles. It has developed a few electrical issues which I can fix relatively easily, needs the driver window motor replaced (did the passenger years ago so I know it's easy), passenger side headlight motor needs to be swapped as it sometimes just stops working and the reverse light switch on the trans needs to be changed out as my reverse lights don't always come on.
I have all of the parts but with it being 100+ degrees out there every day right now I just can't bring myself to do it on the weekend as after doing yard work every weekend I retreat to the air conditioned sanctuary of my living room.
Even took the car on a road trip over the 4th weekend and it performed flawlessly (1000+ miles).

My problem is every time I look at something else be it a nice used GTO, later model T/A or a G8 I just can't bring myself to get rid of the old bird. I wind up taking it on a little drive and I remember why I love this car.

Sure the idle is a little off due to a vaccum leak somewhere, the intake manifold gaskets need changing to completely eliminate a water leak somewhere, front main seal, rear main seal and oil pan gasket (or a combination of those) need changing out to eliminate an oil leak and there are few other nagging things but honestly I really want to drive this car until it dies.

My wife says I'll never get rid of it and I'm beginning to think that is true, the only thing that bugs me is my house only has a 2 car garage and if I kept it and bought something else one of the 2 would have to sit out in the weather and I don't want that either.

I saw a post where James finally sold his bird (I thought it was gone after the flood but haven't been keeping up) and it got me to thinking. I don't know if I will ever get rid of mine. It's basically worthless to sell so I really don't see it being worth the hassel to sell it myself and trade in on it is a joke.

Anyone else in the same situation?

Re: I just can't let go of the firebird

I told myself I would never sell my camaro, I said, Hey... It's paid off, I dont care if it sits in a barn for the next 20 years and my kid wants to fix it up....

But it started nickel and diming me to death, it got old, fast. Id fix one thing, then drive and a few days later it was acting up again.

I sold the car, and was so relieved.

Please don't follow James' example. Next thing you know we have a whole bunch of Lemmings jumping the cliff.

I say keep it and buy the other car you like.

Re: I just can't let go of the firebird

I've come to the false realization many times that I should sell my Camaro, but everytime I go to put all the stock interior back in, I see more things that I'd like to do with it... and I know our cars will never have the same value as the '60's and '70's cars... but my dad had a 77 Trans Am that he sold a year before I was born... it was in amazing condition too... and every time I see pictures of it I curse him for selling it... maybe my kids (someday) might appreciate my car as I would have my dad's... plus... I like my car too much... my friend's parents just bought him a Corvette, and as sweet as that car is... I would still have a hard time getting rid of my Camaro, even for it... I've put so much work into it, work that if I sold it, no one would be able to appreciate as much as I do... long story short... I'm probably a lifetime owner of a 96 V6 Camaro...
Rebuilding the engine... Building a custom front end... T-top conversion... Custom rear hatch..
          Custom interior...

i put my car up for sale simply for the fact that i got tired of working on it...i guy came by and offered me 2300 for it, and when it came down to it, i couldnt do it. so as soon as he left, i took it back apart to put one more good attempt into it...maybe ill get mad enough this time to just sell it....

Re: I just can't let go of the firebird

I've tried to talk myself into selling mine numerous times. I get pissed at it for not running right and jump on craigslist, find lots of decent deals and one or two amazing deals. Start thinking about the best way to get the most cash out of it (demodding usually), and start going over a list of everything I've done to it; this is when I realize how much money and hard work I've put into the car, and start remembering all the good times in it. I close out the craigslist deals, and go for a spin even if she's not running right :P. It also helps that no one locally owns a car like mine. Within 100 miles of me I know there's not another V6 car with the potential to hit 13's, maybe even 12's with spray! I've alway been the underdog type, so I think this car is going to stay. I've started out pricing a LS1 build numerous times, and eventually said screw it let's do the V6 :)

i vote hold on to her man, you'll regret it down the road if you dont, and you wont get a fair deal on all the time & money you've put into it.

i've had my dealership call and write letters wanting me to sell back both the v6 and ls1---that day will never come for me.
