  • repainting my trailer...

Ive got a trailer, with a 20 ft deck, and a 3 ft storage cabinet up front with a tire carrier, and then the tongue length, probably about 26ft long total, dual axle, dove tail.
Its all metal, the deck is diamond plate that has been painted twice since it was built about 5-6 yrs ago.

Im needing to sand the whole thing down to knock off any little rust and paint that is chipping off. My buddy used it as his race car trailer, and painted a few #'s on the backside of the storage, and some devils holding a checkered flag on the doors... He used like canvas paint, and I need to take a grinder to get the paint off of those.

After that Im painting it, it will be mostly dark grey, with a little black on the side rails and whatnot.

What paint should I use, I planned on using rustoleum, thinning it out a little with some thinner, and rolling / brushing it on.. but is there a better paint that will hold up to the abuse of sitting outdoors, and getting used alot?

Im updating it with all LED' tailights, and safety reflective tape on a few parts.

    Thanks
    *Matt

go to sherwin williams paint store and ask for this specific paint....( i know this is useless cuz I don't remember what it's called) but it is specifically for metal, rust etc. And I have used it to paint a couple of industrial trucks and it worked really well. They should know what it is, just tell them its for metal. it is like 150 bucks for a 5 gallon bucket.

Get some 2 part Epoxy paint. It will be more durable.

way overkill... I probably wont need more than a gallon of each(color), if that.

psh if that were the case, id park it in the ghetto for 20 minutes, and it would probably get a "tagger" paint job.. That's free!

Maybe if I prepped the trailer's surface with trans-x it will withstand all weather conditions and all the abuse I can throw at it.

that sounds risky, that much trans-x in one place could cause your trailer to turn into a truck and become optimus prime/bobby from the brady bunch...

I sprayed Rustoleum on my car trailer with an automotive spray gun about 15 years ago and it's still in good shape. No rusting or pealing. Only kicker is you can't thin it, you need to turn the air pressure up and spray it like it comes out of the can (did not use spray cans).

Jesus, do you keep it indoors and under a protective cover, lol....

15 years, Im lucky If I can go 15 days without scratching mine.

Although, you probably have a wood deck with helps, i have a steel diamond plate deck.
