  • Chevy Volt at 230mpg?

I heard this in the news today that GM claimed that the Volt could do 230 mpg. Many critics and even government officials don't believe the claim.

    Here's a brief article:

General Motors jolted the automotive world yesterday by announcing that its upcoming electric-drive Chevy Volt will earn an EPA city mileage rating of 230 mpg. It's an astounding claim - one that would make the Volt more than four times as efficient as the Toyota Prius. And yet, even the federal government says it can't back up GM's math.

    What's going on here?

General Motors jolted the automotive world yesterday by announcing that its upcoming electric-drive Chevy Volt will earn an EPA city mileage rating of 230 mpg. It's an astounding claim - one that would make the Volt more than four times as efficient as the Toyota Prius. And yet, even the federal government says it can't back up GM's math.

The Volt is one of several so-called Extended-Range Electric Vehicles, or EREVs, in development. An EREV functions as an electric car until its batteries are depleted to a certain level; then it starts a small gasoline engine. That engine, however, doesn't drive the wheels - it merely acts as a generator to recharge the batteries. The Volt, GM says, can travel about 40 miles at any speed before its onboard generator kicks in.

That number is significant, because Department of Transportation figures show that most Americans drive less than 40 miles per day. For most of us, owning a Chevy Volt could mean rarely ever using gasoline.

Bad math = 230mpg, actual mileage about 50mpg

they say its the EQUIVALENT of 230MPG, it only has something like a 2 gallon tank that assists the electric motor in recharging it.

Research it, battery only lasts 40 miles, after the main battery is dead, a small gas generator lights up to recharge the battery until you get home to plug it in.

Does it carry the full benefits of an electric car--can you choose to plug it in overnight and charge it up instead of having the on-board generator charge it?

So let's say the car is driven 50 miles in a day. For the first 40 miles, no gas is used and during the last 10 miles, 0.2 gallons are used. That's the equivalent of 250 miles per gallon. But, if the driver continues on to 80 miles, total fuel economy would drop to about 100 mpg. And if the driver goes 300 miles, the fuel economy would be a just 62.5 mpg.

yes you can plug it into a standard outlet to charge, thats why it's called a plug in electric car :D

I saw this in the newspaper as well and you know what's the problem? 40K MSRP!!!!. Are you out of your mind GM? Do you really think I will buy this half electric half baby engine car when I can get a C6 corvette or many other AWESOME cars for 40,000? If I had 40K to spend, this is the last car I'm looking.

If they really want to move this, then they should price it less than 20K.

BTW, Nissan just announced a new electric car Nissan leaf. I know it's ugly but it give you 100 miles on the full charge rather than 40. and you know what's the coolest part? I think it'll be less than $15000 (or even less). $40000 vs 15000 (or less)

the volt is not really meant to drive long distances
i heard that the average American drives less than 40 miles a day so if you just drive it around town regularly and plug it in at night then you should be good.

i wonder what kind of impact it will have on your electric bill tho?
