First day of college class tomorrow (I'm the prof)
First day of college class tomorrow (I'm the prof)
Each Fall, I teach a junior level course at a state university. This year, I'm thinking of beginning the class by walking in and quoting Severus Snape:
"I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death -- if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach."
That'll get things going on the right foot...
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

That would work. :stp:
This is a class that weeds students out of the major. I am beginning with the maximum, 40 students. I'm guessing 3 or 4 will drop after tomorrow night and by the end of the semester, we'll be down to less than 25.
I try to be very candid with them in the first class: This is a hard class, hours of reading, practice and repetition are required, no grade curves, exams are very difficult, etc, etc, etc. The bottom line is that if a student cannot make it in this class, they are not going to be successful in the rest of the classes in this major.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.
