  • need some mac help

So a few months ago my ibook G4 laptop popped up with a message telling me I needed to restart my computer. I found out this was called a "kernel panic" I had never worked inside a computer so I just set it aside since my roommate has a computer I can use anytime, but I ran across some websites that show how to fix the problem by removing and replacing the RAM, so I did that yesterday and haven't received the kernel panic warning since, but now my computer still isn't acting normally... I've had the mouse freeze up on me twice... I could use the keyboard shortcut to restart and then the mouse would work for awhile but eventually freeze up again. I left my computer on overnight to see if the kernel panic would come back since sometimes it took awhile, and this morning I came out and I couldn't get it to come back from sleep mode. Usually if I tap the space bar it starts right up, but it didn't start no matter what I did...

I don't think it's a software issue bc after the initial kernel panic message I did a clean install of the OS 10.4, and haven't installed anything since... should I do this again after messing with the RAM?

Any insight into my problem or suggestions of things I could try would be appreciated... I don't feel like taking it in bc it's at least $70 just to run a basic diagnostic...

The computer was purchased in 2004... so no warranty left. I start classes back up on Tuesday so it'd be nice to have my computer back...

Sorry for the long post but any and all suggestions would be great, thanks...

        Re: need some mac help

just got another kernel panic warning... It looks like I might have to take it in bc only one of the two ram DIMMs is consumer accessible, the other is built in... annoying...

Any suggestions would still be appreciated...

thanks koa, that's what I thought, but I'm thinking it's the built-in ram bc I powered it up with out the removeable ram and it still gave the kernel panic and all the manuals I've read say that shouldn't happen...

No reason not to take it in. Is there an apple store in Columbus?

                Otherwise hit up myservice.com
I broke my screen a while back. Apple quoted me like $900 to repair it. Myservice (was called macservice at the time) had a deal where you send it to them and they do it for like $300. They fixed it in a day, I got it back in the mail the next day. Pretty badass service if you ask me!
