Looks like Ford, Honda, and Toyota did great, but GM and Chrysler were stomped.

    ---------------------------------------------------

Ford Motor Co. sold 181,826 cars and light trucks compared with 155,117 in August 2008, when high gas prices and growing economic uncertainty kept people away from showrooms.

Two of Ford's vehicles -- the Focus and Escape -- were among the top selling cars under the clunkers program. Sales of the Focus rose 56 percent while those of the Escape crossover vehicle climbed 49 percent.

Japanese automakers Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. also posted gains year-over-year gains in August. Toyota sales rose 6.4 percent to 225,088, lifted by small cars like the Corolla, the best-selling clunkers vehicle.

Honda sales rose 9.9 percent to 161,439, also largely on the strength of its fuel-efficient offerings.

Meanwhile, low supplies of fuel-efficient vehicles at Chrysler kept the automaker from benefiting more from the clunkers program, whose rebates encouraged customers to buy gas sippers in exchange for guzzlers with gas mileage of 18 mpg or less.

Chrysler sales fell 15 percent to 93,222 units.

Going into August, five of Chrysler's most efficient vehicles were already at low inventory levels. Those vehicles -- the Dodge Caliber, the Chrysler Sebring, the Jeep Patriot, the Jeep Compass and the Dodge Avenger -- all qualified as Cash for Clunkers purchases.

To make up for the shortfalls, Chrysler is boosting production by 50,000 vehicles of most of its vehicles through the end of the year.

At General Motors Co., sales fell 20 percent to 245,550. GM said its inventory levels hit an all-time low of 379,000 during August.

GM vehicles like the Chevrolet Aveo subcompact, the Cobalt sedan and Equinox crossover got a lift from the clunkers program. No GM vehicles made the closely watched list of top-10 Cash for Clunkers sales, but they had the largest market share behind Japan's Toyota Motor Corp.

GM also said it was extending through the end of September its test program selling vehicles on eBay.

Consumers are expected to steer clear of dealers this autumn now that the clunker rebates are no longer available.

What are they going to do next? Deals like this pull prospective buyers in early, then there is a slump again. Like when they offer zero percent financing, sales go up, then when it's over, sales go down. Nothing like creating a roller coaster business. This makes a nightmare for trying to schedule all the way down to the steel suppliers. Gang busters for two months, going broke for 6 months.

        The losers:

The US tax payer is probably paying $9000 for every $4500 rebate after all the red tape; Destroying a car that probably runs, probably paid for, to encourage people to buy a new car on credit. Not to mention all the people that benefit from charities that accept donated cars.

And it took away a lot of decent cars that people having a hard time could possibly afford. Then they could have gotten rid of their real clunker that burns more oil than gas and has 4 tires that match only because they are bald!

Now they could have given a little more forethought and offered the first round of "Cash for Clunkers" trade ins to people who brought in their clunker that actually is a clunker. This would actually have gotten the cars off the road they boasted the program was for.

All I saw was another handout program for the auto industry by the Feds...oh wait isn't that a conflict of interest now the Govt owns GM? Talk about insider trading, I wonder if the stock went up...

You have a good point there. This is from USA News and World Report:

In 2005, Congress tightened the rules for deducting donated vehicles in response to concerns that many taxpayers were inflating the value of donated junkers. Under the law, most taxpayers can deduct only the amount the charity receives when it sells the donated vehicle. For example, if a charity sells your Cadillac Eldorado to a wholesaler for $200, that's the maximum you can deduct, even if you think your car is worth much more than that.

However, if you choose your charity carefully, you may be eligible for a larger deduction. If you give your car to an organization that refurbishes cars and uses them to conduct its activities, you can deduct the fair market value of the car. Likewise, you can deduct the fair market value if the charity gives or sells the vehicle at low cost to a needy individual.

I am waiting to see what happens here in the long run........I mean, the economy fell (in part) due to alot of people having huge mortgages that they can't afford, which makes the banks fail, and so on. So now, did too many people trade in thier clunker to buy a new car they can't afford?? Are we heading into a worse recession??

I dunno, I know nothing about economics......

remember, no matter what happens, the big three are too important to fail. Our taxes will see to that.

Pretty sure we pumped tax dollars into GM and it still failed ie: bankruptcy...

Yeah, I find it odd that the bailout stated that GM had so many days to get reorganized or money comes back. Yet only one day after bankruptcy a whole slew of ideas, plans, and changes are in effect... WTF? Wernt they suppose to do that for all the damned money that was given to them...
