  • Who's had the pleasure of working on a Jeep 4.0L?

So I recently bought a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo for winter knowing it had a serious oil blowby problem. Being adventerous, I pulled off the valve cover to clean out the crap blocking the Crankcase Ventalation valve system. In the process I ended up destroying the gaskets that were on the snorkels
( pic for reference, not mine http://www.off-road.com/jeep/cheroke...es/cover5.jpg)

Does anyone know if I'll be able to buy new gaskets for these, or will I have to mess with RTV sealant? I've never had any luck with that crap.

I also managed to break the CCV valve. For anyone that's tried to deal with the blowby problem, does a new CCV valve come with part# 4762592, or is it just the grommet and tube? It doesn't seem like I can just pick up a new ccv valve anywhere.

On to how to get the valve cover back...
I bought a new FelPro cork gasket for it. Should it be easy as just putting the new gasket down, putting the cover back on, and tightening the bolts down? God I hope so.

On top of this crap being so damn annoying, it's 30 degrees outside with a chance of snow fulrries.

      The 4.0 straight 6 is a good motor. Though, for a 91, wouldn't that be a 4.2?

I found seal-a-gasket to work so much better than gaskets. Yeah, it's messy, but it works.

For the valve cover, I would use the cork gasket AND seal-a-gasket or else you are asking for a leak in the near future. Putting the valve cover on is easy. Just don't over torque the bolts.

      30 degress, snow? in NC?

To my knowledge they never put a 4.2L anything in any Cherokee.

When I took out the valve cover bolts they weren't even tight. I could put the socket on each one and turn it by hand. I'll have to find torque specs for the bolts and try to borrow a torque wrench.

I went to the Jeep dealership and found out that the valve cover on the engine isn't the correct one for that year. Luckily, the parts for it were cheaper than the ones I thought I was going to need, but they're harder to install.

Some people forget that NC contains a nice chunk of the Appalachian Mtns. Skiing is a course offered here at the university ;)
Currently with 32 mph wind gusts the wind chill is 23°.

They did use a 4.2 for the CJ and the first year or two of the YJ. I am not sure of the cherokee.

You can guess the torque of valve cover bolts pretty easily - just snug them up.

What was the valve cover from?

I had no idea you could ski in NC. I have only every been to RTP.

Never been a 4.2L in an XJ.

The valve cover bolts where supposed to be tightened to 5 ft lbs, but we didn't have a torque wrench that could go that low.

The valve cover on there was a black-painted aluminum cover from a newer 4.0L, according to the guy at the Jeep dealership. I had to rip out the old ccv valves and grommets and put new ones in, whereas the one for my year I would have just twisted them in and out very easily, but the parts would have been more expensive.

As far as skiing, we've got Appalachian Ski Mnt, Beach Mtn, Sugar Mtn, and Ski Hawksnest. The Blue Ridge Parkway comes through here. We're close to the Appalachian Trail, Grandfather Mtn, and Tweetsie Railroad.
