I've decided to get back to this project I started some time ago. Anyone tell me what those different colored pieces are from?

hmmm.. i think i remember this post from a while back... lets see if i do..

orange - back half of a rolled two door XJ?
blue - rear of the cab of a comanchee?

OH, and while i'm at it.. my jeep is being a pain in the but as of late.. you know anything about teh dana 30 in these things? What would be making a lot of low speed clunking noises? Doesnt start right away, but gets noticable after 5 minutes of driving, gets better as you go faster, and if i ride the brakes, it gets better too.. just changed wheel joints, wheel bearing hub assemblies, axle shafts, as well as brake pads, rotors and the passenger caliper. Ideas? Its driving me nuts...

I think it'll be pretty cool, the blue sorta looks like the back of an S10 but more than likely wouldnt fit that good and I doubt your that good at fabricating ;) so im gonna go with what the guy said above me.

Yep, you got it right

As for the Dana 30, pull your front driveshaft and drive for a day or so. See if the noise stops. If it does, u-joints... if not, define the noise better for me. :)

Yep.. little Jeep trailer. You see all those custom 4x4 trailers for the cost of what... 5-7K, I'm a bit cheaper. My time is worth money, but for a project.. it's all about the fun and skill of it.

Sweet! I thought i recognized it from something. It's lookin pretty good!

As for the axle, i'm one step ahead of you...barely.. lol... Pulled the front driveshaft last night. U joints feel good in the drive shaft... no binding, and the two halves slide smoothly into and out of each other.

The noise starts off as a rythmic clunk. if i'm going approximately 25 mph, it is approximately once every few seconds. After driving for 10-15 minutes, it gets much worse. If i pull into a parking lot, coasting around 5 mph, itll give off 3 quick clicks, then a pause, then repeat. if i ride the brakes, it stops, until i let off the brakes. if i continue driving, it will click about once per second, going around 25 mph. If i park it for a few hours, the noise stops upon startup and takes the same amount of time to return.

It would seem to be a ujoint, but it does this while going straight. I checked the rear shaft and it seems tight as well. I just changed the wheel joints, but i'm ready to put new ones in just to be safe. OH, one last thing.. the new axle shafts.. they were pulled from the boneyard after my existing ones decided to give up their threads to the spindle nut while trying to get it apart.. I found these is a 93-94 XJ. They had the same length, and same splines, but the axle diameter was 1 3/8, not 1 3/16 like stock, and they had much beefier yokes around the wheel joints.

any ideas? this has me pretty confused...

So that doesn't answer the question, did you drive without the front DS in? I had the same noise, and the u-joints on the DS "seemed" tight, but when I pulled the DS, the noise was gone. I still need to rebuild it :D

As for the shafts, the spline size is what matters. There are different sizes through the years and bigger is usually better :D

Yup.. pulled the drive shaft and the noise is still there.. it wsa ok on my quick test ride last n ight, but this morning going to work it was making a lot of noise. I'm about to pull the diff cover again and pull out the differential. I was having this problem before i changed anything. The wheel joints were shot, so i thought the noise was them. But now, i'm questioning if a bearing in the differential is gone.

Re: Is this crazy of me??

You have not changed the front wheel bearing units yet?? I thought you had when you were talking about bearings. I'm guessing you changed out the u-joint on the stub shaft. It's a very good posibilty that your wheel bearings are going. And you are NOT going to like paying for those. Easy to do, expensive! They are a sealed unit. And to be honest, if your going to keep the Jeep any amount of time... buy the Tomkin brand. Will be more, but will be worth it.

Done and done.. I would only buy the Timken's anyways... I changed both wheel bearing hub assemblies when I changed everything else... Yeah, htey werent' cheap at all... ~135 a piece in my area...

These did not help though. Still have the issue. Still frustrating the crap outta me..

Going to change the front track bar today. the end on the frame has a little play in it. So, we'll get that swapped out and go from there. I'll be pulling apart the axle too in the next week cause it seems the one axle shaft seal is leaking... this should be fun.

any other ideas? at htis point in time, im almost hoping for something to grenade, so at least I know what to fix...

Re: Is this crazy of me??

ok, so i swapped out the rear drive shaft ujoints today. Also noticed oil on the rear, especially on the driver side brake drum backing plate (that wasnt as bad three days ago when I was under the jeep last).... sure enough, the axle seal was leaking. Sooo.. while i had it tore apart to fix the seal, i also changed the wheel bearing, as well as both the bearing and seal on the other side too.

so to recap, here are the things I've changed on this beast thus far:

                          wheel joints - both sides
front wheel bearing hub assemblies - both sides
front axle shafts - both sides
front brakes - pads and rotors
                          passenger front brake caliper
rear wheel bearings and axle seals - both sides
                          rear drive shaft ujoints
also refilled both differentials with 75-90 Mobil 1
pulled the front drive shaft to make sure it wasn't the ujoints in it

still have the damned vibration/clunking noise

after i got back on my test ride, i had someone stand along my jeep as i idled by with the vibration/noise occuring... its the left front. So, i'm bout to tear it all apart again, check the brakes this time, as well as pull the axle shaft again and see if I can't figure this out. I've had pretty much everything apart at least twice now, but maybe I'm missing something. Bear in mind, this is the noise that prompted me to start tearing it apart in the first place. So, I'm thinking its either soemthing I havent touched yet, or I'm a dumbass and I keep puttin stuff back together wrong..

lordy, if i didnt like this truck, it woulda been burned a while ago..

Ok.. one, i'm going to move this to "other rides" since we got off topic.

two.. have you tried to rotate the tires or have them balanced? Odd as it sounds, I have had that problem with my two jeeps. I rotate them with them being a little out of balance and the jeep freaks out.
