i was just wondering (ive searched the forum-so if ive missed this somewhere-my bad) what engine combo is better for cornering? i'm just learning this whole cornering thang, im used to drag racing, but there are some similarities, weight savings for example, i noticed the 3.8 sits back further on my '98 camaro versus the ls1 in my buddys '98 firebird, im told that lends itself to better handeling, & that makes me wonder, which one weighs less...a iron v6 or an aluminum v8? the six is smaller but made out of a heavier material, & the ls1's are aluminum-or are they? are the ls1's "all" aluminum or just the heads? just thinkin outloud...if anybody has any stats or opinions... -thanx

well, ironically enough, i just posted this then cracked open an old super chevy magazine from '02 & guess what was staring me in the face...if their stats are correct, here's the weights they give on the camaro (for '02 anyway-i guess they're the same at least from '98 & up?) <RS/coupe/manual-3323 <RS/coupe/auto-3380 <RS/convertible/manual-3466 <RS/convertible/auto-3524 <Z28&SS/coupe/manual-3411 <Z28&SS/coupe/auto-3433 <Z28&SS/convertible/manual-3554 <Z28&SS/convertible/auto-3577

Re: weight
Assuming both vehicles are completely stock...
V6 has slightly better weight distribution (so little it's probably negligible), so it might be able to take corners slightly faster with some suspension work. V8 may not have as good of weight distribution, but has more torque, so it can slow down going into the corners and accelerate coming out of the corners, unlike the V6, which would probably have to hit the corner at a higher speed to maintain momentum throughout the corner to keep up with the V8 coming out of the corner.
Have to also remember that the V8 has bigger sway bars, slightly wider tires, etc. But when it really comes down to it, individual cars and drivers are going to be the biggest determining factor.
More of a noticeable difference in comparison, but some of the local "cruises" I go on have a number of 5/6 speed Miatas and LS1 F-bodies. While the Fbodies have the torque to pull out of a corner rather quickly, they have to slow down considerably going into these corners to make it through. The Miatas just fly through the corners, oftentimes not touching the brakes, to pass and outhandle the Fbodies.'99 Camaro

Re: weight
awesome-as usuall y'all are a wealth of knowledge! what an incredibile break down of the parts/weights! thank you! ...it'll give me something to "obsess" over-lol! & as far as the lil'mazdas & cars like it...ive seen them little cars do some wild stuff like that, we have a section of road just over from me, kinda famous, deals gap (aka-the dragons tail) 318 mountain corners in 11 miles! & those lil'miatas can go thru there tearing it up-usually only gettin shown up by the sport bike guys--man those guys are freakin nuts! ...but in a good way-lol! btw-i also noticed where i did miss some "weight info" under the tech section-oops-but thank ya'll for all the input! as corny as it may sound, i have really enjoyed this car & part of the reason are all the friendly, knowledgable, & ready to help attitude kinda folks on this forum--big time kudos ya'll!

Re: weight
I have picked up both the auto was alittle heavier , not much but then you have to look at the extra bracing the manuals have on the sides where the motor mounts are, autos don't have that and also the slave & master cly, extra pedal , all the stuff adds up, even the steering colums are different from auto to manual.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake
