  • Test and Tune session.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum so I figured I'd start with posting a proud experience in my V6 Camaro.
Did my first ever drag racing session the other night in my 1996 Camaro RS 3.8L with Auto Trans! What an experience I must add.
Anyways, my Camaro is 'stock' though having SLP CAI, Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust, Summit Racing HO Coils, 8.2mm Taylor ThunderVolt Wires. Just bolt on junk.
Took down the track on my first run managed a 17.17 @75.01 MPH. I was disappointed, but it was my first try and I just put it in OD and gas give gas. Kept at it, and by the 5th race I pulled my best time of 15.83@85.03 MPH! That was my best time of the night and I was pretty proud, especially being a 15 year old base model car.
Then, go figure, my father was racing with his Mustang club that night, and he wants to shoot my Camaro down the track and on his first time gets a 15.70@85.23 MPH.

I have Pacesetter headers to install, so I'd like to see what it will run with those.
I'm rambling, but I was just really excited to share after having this car for 4 years and always wondering what it's 1/4 times were and I was really impressed! Had a blast.
And I learned a lot about racing. You always hear people 'talk' about how fast their cars are, and frankly people will say a 15 second car is slow, but in the whole night I was finding that most factory cars were doing 15-17 1/4 mile times. Some brand new cars would break into mid 14s, but for the most part 15-17 was entirely normal and respectable.

congrats on your first runs at the track...a little more practice, few more mods, and maybe dropping a few pounds on the car will definetly get you some quicker times as well...careful though, it's addicting...

    2002 SOM Z28 Camaro - 12.9 @ 104 mph
    1996 3800 Camaro - 13.43 @ 100.77 mph

                Re: Test and Tune session.

I ran a 15.3, thats my best so far. Congrats on the first run, not bad.

It is fun! I had a blast talking to people in staging lanes and the racing itself.

If your looking to go faster just at the track, maybe give it a little spray. Im hoping to break 13s with a 75 shot.

Funny you mention a 75 shot of spray. I was watching Pass Time some years back and they had an older fella with a 2002 V6 Camaro. He said it was stock down to the exhaust but he'd installed a 75 shot on it.
He turned a 14.4 and I was impressed.

It was addicting for sure. And everyone was very cool and just talked cars. Not like the little kids in the Civics that just knock everything in the world. Surprisingly there were none at the track that day, except one and he was turning consistent 19s.

                    Re: Test and Tune session.

ricers tend to stay away from the track, they cant use any of the usual excuses there or do ricer fly bys. kind of hard to do a fly by on a 10 second car when they've already pulled the front wheels off the ground thru the 1/8 mile and are beating the **** out of you already lol.

I noticed that. But the ricer crowd never struck me as the kind of people who 'put their money where their mouth is'.

And I grew up in the 'hatchback generation' inspired by The Fast and The Furious, where all American cars were 'slow'. Except they never hit the track yet somehow knew their 1987 CRX was a 14 sec car...weird.
