I am thinking about pulling the belt next time I am at the track. I have an electric water pump, so I am not worried about over heating. What I am worried about though, is how much time can I run the car off just battery, without it loosing enough juice that I risk not having enough fuel pressure and being in danger of wrecking something?
Fwiw, I have a brand new red top optima battery that just went in a few weeks ago.
How long theoretically should I be able to last on just the battery?
I've made a 45 minute drive up a mountain road on just the battery when the alternator died in my Oldsmobile beater. Had the headlights on even. Granted, the car died in the driveway and I coasted into the garage :P
Worst case you'd need a jump. I seriously doubt you're going to be critically low on battery from one or two 14 second WOT runs.
my worst fear is either A) conking out at staging (or seeing hte battery voltage drop severly and needing to back out) because that's just emabarassing.
or
B) Dying 3/4 of the way down the track and being scared ****less of being hit...
You should be fine. I have watched 5.0 Mustang boys do it at the track all the time. If your worried, put the belt back on and run the motor between rounds.

1. That battery is a waste of money. I don't care what anyone says, I still haven't seen benefits or advantages of owning an Optima over a regular AC Delco or Interstate.
2. Shouldn't have any issues running a few minutes on just battery.

I bought it because it's a gel cell, and I was in need of a new battery badly...I have intentions of putting it into the trunk eventually, and wanted something that I wouldnt have to worry about spilling, or leaking. That's really the only reason I have it. (that and it weighs 33lbs )
I've heard of guys gaining .1 seconds on these cars pulling the belt...I don't know if I am going to pull it yet...but you can sure as hell bet I probably will if I hit 13.1-13.2....every little bit helps...I NEED that 12.99 lol...got 5$ riding on the line here...and I don't loose bets.
Its not just the 5$ you can't put a price on winning a bet.

Is your Batt. in front or rear, I ran about 80 miles off a red top Optima with no Alt. power, I was very surprised, but I had the tow truck driver charge it for about 30-45mins. before I left. I was working at the Prison at the time in the middle of now where, 54 mile drive to get to it one way. then when it went out I had to drive about 80 miles to the dealership to have my free Alt. put on(got to love GM goodwrench lifetime warrranties.LOL). So I think you'll b good for more than a few passes.
