Thats right, lifting a tire off the ground.
What a day... what a weekend.
I spent most of Saturday (until 1am Sunday morning) helping Dom with his suspension install. What a PITA it is. No matter what we do with cars, there is always one bolt that will not cooperate. This one bolt (On top of the strut) just happened to be rusted away... grrr.. anyway
Sunday morning, alarm clock goes off.. 6am. :( Snooze.. 6:10, snooze, 6:20, snoooze...... 7:00.. I'm tired.. I don't feel like goign to the track today. too tired.. But, I get up. I still have to change the wheels on the car and pull out the passenger seat and sub/amp. *sigh*.
8:00, car is ready and I'm ready to go.
9:30, arrive at the track. I don't see any cars? There is just 1 other car there.. My # is 2. *shrug*
I tech in, he asks me if I have a DS loop, no.. He recomends I get one.. we talk, he's a nice guy.. I wonder where everyone is, so does he. He tells me the track was just sprayed so take it easy out of the hole. (I'm thinking,... yea.. Magnus take it easy? hmm.. nah).. I pull up.. do a nice healthy burnout.. Nittos at 25psi.. line up.. BAM.. 1.832 60' and run a 14.17@93.90.. Heck yea! I know i can do better on the 60'.. so I know I can do better.. but still 14.17 is kick *** .. new best for me..
I decide to lean the car out a little more with the MAFT+. (Ported TB really makes it run rich). 1.812 60' 14.122@94.35! Heck yea!
I decide to add some more advance (Now at -6% +4). 1.806 60' 14.099@93.95.. SWEET
I'm coming around to hot lap (My car really does well hot lapping).. I go around the burnout box and as I'm backing up, the pit director comes up to me, and I roll down my window.. he says.. "Congratulations, you just pulled a tire." I was awe struck, I responded several times, with .. What?? Huh?? No way. Yeup. He tells me to do it again, so.. who am I to say no..
I was able to do it a few more times. I was really launching HARD.
Now... there was only me and another car there.. So I was talkin a lot with the director. I would stage the car and he would come up some what close and watch.. so he was able to get a great view.. He told me that the tire woudl hang for a split second. Totally kick *** .
Anyway, I'm about done for the day, I've hit some great #'s so I tell him this will be my last pass, he says Take care, so do I...
I do a healthy burnout.. stage it.. BAM
60' : 1.802
330': 5.619
1/8 : 8.865@74.24
1/4 : 14.076@94.11
and sure enough, I FELT the tire come back down. It didn't hang long at all, but it did come up.
Now, your wondering how I can pull a tire on a 1.80 60' when it takes V8's 1.6's and 1.5's.. So am I.. I did some thinking about this on the way home.. First, I lowered the rear PSI to 20 for the latter passes. I had light weight skinnies on front and no A/C or sway bar. The front of my car is somewhat light. Also, my converter hits HARD. For those who have seen my car launch at the track, I'm sure they understand.
But, if I have the power to pull the wheels, how come my 60's are not better? Well, its not realy power to pull the wheel, but more like shock. I was able to shock the car enough to get the wheel to hop off the ground... Plus, with the V8's who pull tires, they still have much more power to accelerate for a quicker time where as I only have the power of the v6 so it won't accelerate that fast..
How much did you pull the tire?
Well, not much at all.. Maybe an inch for a foot or so. Nothing at all like our V8 brothers do. It was very minute.
I was thinking about getting HAL's for the front for the sole purpose of pulling a tire, but It seems that stock V6 suspension is adequate. I will probably do lighter A-Arms and possibly K-member to lighten up the front even more.
Also, I'm looking forward to spraying 125 TNT out of the hole on a 15x10 slick. :D
In conclusion, I am VERY happy with this timeslip. Not only did I have a great 60', I had a good 1/4 ET AND finally a good MPH.
The temp was upper 40's and there was a 0-5mph tail wind.
I'm very happy. Also, this was done with stock heads & cam. The valve covers have never been off my motor. I'm lookin forward to my heads/cam #'s.
Take Care.
