  • Stupid drag race question-Using 2nd gear start

    Hey!

Humor me. While I was on my smoke break I was thinking: What if I launched using the second gear start? Would it effectively get my rpms up to a higher range, sort of like a pseudo torque converter? I don’t know if this would be good at the track because you probably need the power of 1st gear, but what about your 2 or 3 city block street race? I’ve only been in SGS a couple of times, so I don’t know the rpms that your car begins to effectively make power when doing this. I also feel that it probably wouldn’t be good for your tranny, but I don’t street race that often. It’ll probably require some practice, but wouldn’t it be cool if it works. I’m out of town, and can’t try it until Friday, but please give me your opinions. Just a thought.

Wouldn't the RPMs be lower with that? Starting in 2nd gear takes more to get it going. When I had my 3.42/LSD installed before I reset the PCM it wouldn't shift all the down to 1st, so I would start in 2nd gear and it totally bogs when you try to give it some throttle.

It won't help. It will hurt. You will go much slower. You need First gear off the line.

Also, if you go WOT with SGS on, it will automatically shift into first anyway.

Yeah I knew about the automatics downshifting to 1 when going WOT. I wasn't planning on going WOT until I got a good roll goin', but you guys make perfect sense. Thanks to both of you for your replies. Well if the 3.42s don't do it for me, I'll get the SLP hood and call it quits on modding.
