I don't see how you could make up the time of the "shift" by doing that. The faster you do that, the less rpms go up... no advantage besides extra wear. Do it longer, and you rev higher, but lose time that the engine could actually be applying torque to the rear wheels... plus even more wear when it goes back into drive.

Good god?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?
Neutral drops???
At 49 mph under wot you throw it into neutral and then back in drive?????
This does not work.
You will not go faster.
You are only damaging your tranny.
How many times have you gone down the 1/4?
I know I've been down it many times.
You never do that method.
All you will do is damage the tranny

I tried that 49 to neutral technique and didn't really like it so, I'm gonna stick to the "flooring it" method unless there's some other technique.

This guy knows what he is talking about.

Bradley, I was actually talking to Keith that time. No offense but this is very bad for the tranny.

For anyone who is even thinking about shifting their car out of drive and into neutral and back into drive at wide open throttle, Please do NOT do it..

Don't even try it..

Unless you live life on the edge and want to risk destroying your transmission.

quote:
well there is a little technic you might try but you have to perfect it to make it work. Under full aceleration at 49 mph put it in neutral and then back into drive real fast just once though. a car was pulling on me one time and i did my technic and beat him. Work on it it helps.

Keep it on the gas. All it is is like power shifting in a manual. It revs your rpms up a little and puts it to the ground quick. Just try it youll see what im saying. But i didnt say its easy sometimes it will over rev or not do it at all. I have it perfected now so its just natural to me. And trust me it helps when racing.

Even if this manuver wasn't bad for the transmission, how is it going to improve your time? When power shifting a manual, you minimize the time to shift and the rpm drop when CHANGING the gear, a needed action. If you shift into nuetral and back into drive in an auto, you are still in the same gear. You simply spent a small amount of time spinning your engine as you slow down, rolling down the road. When you shift into drive again, you are now doing a few mph slower and the engine rpms will drop back close to, if not at, where you were before. It seems you are simply pausing the accelaration with this

Have you ever seen someone in a manual apply the clutch in the middle of say second gear, keep throttle applied to rev the motor, and then dump the clutch while still in second gear? I am no drag race expert but how is this going to improve your times?

Well whatever yall say im not going to change what i do. It works for me. No your mph doesnt change. Yes you jump forward if done correctly. And i have proof that it works. Im not sure but i think i already said this once. I was in a race and a guy was passing me and pulling pretty hard. Unlucky for him i was at about 48 mph and when she hit 49 (neutral drive "the right way") i jumped in front of him and took him the rest of the way. Thanks but i dont have nos and our cars just dont get torque happy all of a sudden to do that. Well have fun.

O and i did do it at the track and it took about 2 tenths off. I was running constant 15.4 15.5 and i dropped it to a 15.3 when i did that.

Awesome Bradley! Keep up the good work. Trans shops LOVE people like you.

When you are getting your rebuild, Don't go all out stage 4.. a lot of that is just way over priced.. I say get your trans fixed.. OEM rebuild.. and just add corvette servo, transgo and a cooler.

Make sure you tell your trans mechanic your new driving style as well.. Brighten up their day a little.. They'll probably tell you though that its a great idea and continue to do it.. but they will give you no warantee.. I bet they tell you to tell your friends about your new race proven strategy as well.

TTT for old time's sake. :D Let's revisit this argument.

I figure the Drag Racing forum is dead in the winter, this breath of fresh air might spice things up a bit.
