• my 2800 stall converter.. flash it or stall it for best launch.

i have a 97 camaro rs w/y87.. it's bluecamaro's old converter. it's a yank 2800 with a 1.9 str. and a 98% efficenty. i'm going to gainsville wensday. i still haven't mastered this converter yet. i'm on street tires. do i just flast it or stall it to around 2500 and punch it. my best 60ft to date is a 2.1. i know this converter has much more in it, but then again i'm on street tires.. any suggestions... i'm getting some DR's as soon as i get the money...

Try different things..

flashing from idle..
flashing from 1200
flashing from 1500
flashing from 1800
flashing from 2000

My converter likes it best from about 1500.

If your not dead hooking, lower the tire PSI or get more tire.

I tried stalling it and flashing it.
Mine seemed to see no different results with either method.
I just stall it to 2800 and let her rip!!!!

I'm thinking about getting this converter myself. Tell me, would a 2.5 stall ratio be too high on a N/A car with 3.42 gears? Would I roast the tires easily? I don't wanna do that.

That's where you open your trenchcoat going down the track, and shock the other driver into defeat.

Seriously though, it refers to the converter suddenly going from no load to full load from the engine. In other words, mash the gas to the floor all at once, instead of easing into it. It's a little like popping the clutch in a manual. The engine spins up a little more while the converter internals start to catch up.

Holding higher rpm's before flashing trims the flash effect a little, because the converter is already starting to load up.

Magnus said it well above. Look at his reply again, and see if it makes more sense now. Try some different techniques and see what works best for you and your tires and suspension.

Generally speaking, street tires and everything else stock, flashing from idle will give you the most tire spin (sometimes good for effect, but not good for launching).

Although I can spin my wife's Suzuki station wagon tires best by holding the rpms up, and then hitting the gas... :D

I get the best street launches (with lsd and stock 235/55's) by holding about 2000 and then flooring it. Very little spin on the street, and it is turning 4k before I know it, so I am up in the powerband right away.

I didn't experiment with it at the track yet. Only went once so far, and I was too focused on the experience, and the timing, and all the rest that goes with it.

Generally you will hook better at the track, so you can get away with flashing from a lower rpm for a bigger jolt and still not spin.

so it is better to flash from lower rpms then say u have a 2800 stall to hold at 2800 and floor it sorry i am just confused.

When you brake torque the RPM's to the stall point, you won't have a hit like you would if hte rpm's came up from down low and whacked the flash point.

You should launch harder by flashing the stall, but you might not hook it which is why its sometimes better to just stall it up there.

On the V6 I usually come up the converter to about 1800-1900 RPM. This works for me. I average 1.7 60-foot times.

On the WS6 I come up the converter to about 2100-2200 RPM. This also works for me. I average low 1.6 60-foot times.
