• Powershifting the T5

Since this has not been discussed on this board... Who thinks powershifting the T5 at the strip is "okay" and who thinks its a "sin"?

I'm talking stock trans, stock engine, stock clutch =).

The T56 guys @ LS1.com seem to like powershifting the 6 speed, I assume its far tougher, but I just thought I'd ask =). I haven't powershifted mine, don't want to break anything - just asking :D Also, for those of you who have, did you notice any improvements in the 1/4 in doing so?

I usually do the 1-2 powershift while at the track. But my T5 needs some internal work with the mileage for me to got the 2-3 powershift. Yes, you can get an extra sliver of ET with it. In theory, it's no different than a really good torque converter, just with a manual.

I powershift all gears at the track, and a decent amount of time on the street.

Drive train componets I replaced:
Driveshaft(stock out of balance)
Rear axle (stock one leaking and broken)
Tranny mount (broke)
Clutch (yes I am on my third)
Tranny (the snchros are going out, haven't been able to go in reverse for a year)

Am I happy with my times... Yes.

I think a car can handle it jsut do not do it as bad as me.

hehe, yea same here, beat the crap out of it, all my shifts are pretty much powershifts, nothing broke yet other then the clutch though, the CF DF seems to hold up well though

oh yea Im not happy with my times though. traction much needed....

T-5's just don't seem to hold up that well when power shifting. I broke the T-5 in my '84 Z28 HO twice and switched to the world class and it still broke.

The T-56 does a little better. I had the trans replaced twice in my 96 WS6 under warranty. Don't know if that was because of shifting or not. It would pop out of gear under very light throttle and it had a TSB about that problem.

Granny shifting = Gas, letoff, clutch, shift, ease into the next gear

Speed Shifting = Gas, letoff, clutch, shift, pop the next gear

Powershifting = Gas, DONT LET OFF, clutch quickly and shift simultaneously, pop the clutch all while leaving her floored :D

I did it, it works, it'll kick my rear out and do a 10' burnout in the 1-2 if I do it right. Really fun, really smooth, probably not good on the car though heh. I'll save this for the dragstrip, see if it helps my times.

My dad taught me a good technique for powershifting. It might help some of you out.

As soon as you launch start pulling down on the shifter. Not hard enough to pull it out of gear or anything, but go ahead and be ready for the shift. Instead of dropping your foot straight down on the pedal, go in at an angle to the left. If you get it right, your foot will brush across clutch pedal and press it in just enough to slam the shifter down to second.

You will pick up more than you think powershifting over granny shifting, i used to have a little toyota truck that i would run at the track every now and then, i always had hell hitting 2nd gear so i decided to granny shift 1-2, i slowed down .2!!! i didnt think it hurt that much, then another time, i was racing the little truck and my dad made a pass in it, he is a street racer from a long time and can drive the $hit out of a stick, he picked it up .2 and he was 65lbs heavier than me at the time!!

Brushing the clutch might make you quicker, but thats the *hardest* method on the drivetrain. After reading about blown T56's, the fastest way to powershift and not kill anything is to bounce the clutch off the floor.

I have powershifted maybe 2 times in my life. Shifts are fast and firm. I like it and know that it works. But I dont want to break stuff.

You are definately correct there. Everything stops and starts again VERY quickly. I was at the track when my dad suggested this to me. I reminded him about the ripped apart transmission on my garage floor, and the fact that my window switch STILL doesn't work, and he suggested that I hold off on doing that. I haven't tried it yet. I used to power shift the crap out of my 5-speed, street / strip it didn't matter. I put 22,000 on that car before trading and never had any problems.
