  • supercharger track time...

I recently installed a powerdyne supercharger on my car and took it to the track tonight. I was expecting low 14's but could only get a best time of 14.931. Any ideas what could have gone wrong?
    R/T...1.066
    60'...2.147
    30...6.198
    1/8...9.534
    MPH...73.52
    1000..12.465
    1/4...14.931
    MPH...92.03
Performance mods to the car are:
    6.lb powerdyne
    3.42/LSD
RK sport headers/3 inch high flow cat/2.5 inch flowmaster
    Trans-go shift kit
    1 piece drive shaft

My boost gauge is reading 7-9lbs. of boost
Fuel Pressure gauge reads 42 at idle 54 @WOT
    Temp. was about 68

Any ideas how I can get that time down?

    Launch.

You already have an advantage - I think '97 Firebirds were born faster than the rest of the 3.8s. You've got a lot of mods, you should be in the high 13s, work on the launch.

BTW: Why was your boost gauge reading 7 - 9 lbs of boost when it's only a 6 lbs unit? Most people have problems getting their boost up to 6 lbs, much less more.

I created a little device to help tighten up the supercharger belt so that it wouldn't slip so bad. I can get the belt VERY tight but eventualy the belt strecthes and it needs tightened again. At the track I also added some belt dressing to help prevent it from slipping.

        Launch is not the problem.
Your mph is horrible for your mods.
        What was the temp out?
Hot and humid I would guess??
Powerdynes are not intercooled so this is probably your problem

Temperature was 68, that's great weather to run in.

I agree, I expected the MPH to be much higher too. The temp was around 68 and it really wasn't that humid. My first run was even worse so i let the car sit with the hood up for 2 hours before I made that run. Before I raced my engine temp. guage still read 160. Do you think there could be something other then the temp. that is causing the low MPH?

              That sounds really wrong..

I would get that checked out. There are some bolt on 3.8s beating your times...

Sounds like the blower was outputting 1-2psi, not 7-9... Your launch was fine btwm 2.1 isnt terrible - but thats a good run for a n/a V6, definetly not a blown one in 68degree weather!

With a blower, it looks like your 60' should be around 1.85 and not 2.1 - that's the only reason I said Launch.

yeah i run 14.8 with bolt ons so thats weriod i would say the boost gauge is wrong and you are not getting boost like you think you sould be like 14.2 or so.

I talked with James from vector performance this morning and he had a couple ideas.

He thinks that the crane ignition device might be retarding the timing way too much which would make the car very sluggish. The car runs the same whether I have the timing set to 0 or 20. He thinks it is possible that it is retarding the timing all the way all the time. He said that if I retard the timing to 5-8 it should feel noticible sluggish and mine doesn't feel any different. I am going to go back and look at the wiring on that and see if I can find the problem.

Also he said that my fuel pressure is way too low. With the fuel pressure at 52 under WOT I should hear LOTS of pinging. I think when I get the timing fixed I might have another issue with low fuel pressure.

just going to say you shoule be running better times.

i saw joe palermo hitting his speed limiter before the end of the track with his blown 99 3.8L, ran consistant 14 flats.

Main thinks are check your fuel pressure, and i would fix that especially on a non innercooled powereadder.

Also as you are running at the moment, I think you could maybe sneak naother 1/10th or so jsut by practicning and lowringt your 60'.
