• Shifting manually with an automatic

Will this make the car run faster if I do it right, or would it just be pointless and make me look like a dumb sh**?

it's called an automatic for a reason...DON'T manually shift it. If you want to do that, get a manual.

Manually shifting an automatic "right" means that you are shifting exactly where the computer has been programmed to shift. At best you gain nothing, and at worst you stand to lose a lot.

A buddy of mine used to manually shift his auto. Wasn't too long before he was replacing that tranny.

Manually shifting an auto is damaging to the transmission & rather pointless.

Regardless of when you shift it, you are still very much at the mercy of the computer.

If you are drag racing, leave it in drive or 3rd (3rd will help you slow down at the end some)

If you are autocrossing on a short track, you can
keep it in 2nd.

But you should not attempt to shift an auto manually.

get a semi-manual valve body and then you can manually shift it. My friend has this on his 3rd gen and it's cool. You leave it in (D) and it drives like an auto but if you pull it to 3,2, or 1, it will hold that gear no matter what. It's like a manual/auto hybrid.

I recomend not manual shifting for most..

However if your setup is very radical and your PCM wants to shift before it should, like on the 3-4 shift.. you may want to wind it out.

I wind out third gear and throw it in 4'th RIGHT after I cross the traps.

Thanks guys, I guess the solution to my car shifting a bit too low (5200 rpm) would be to just get a power programmer..

I leave it in overdrive for n/a and nitroused runs

Why? Would that help me any? What kind of effect on power does overdrive have? I thought it decreases power off the line, which I can see why that would help you to control all your torque.

it doesn't matter if you leave it in D or (D). Basically wherever you put it, that's the highest gear you can utilize.

1 = 1
2 = 1,2
D = 1,2,3
(D) = 1,2,3,4

I usually keep it in D and it helps me slow down at the end of the track.

so.... say since i did gears... and my tranny wants to shift a bit early, i could shift it manually and it would shift a little later where it is supposed to? until i get a reprogram that is

you COULD do that BUT I found that it won't IMMIDIATELY upshift when you shift up. It usually takes a few seconds and so you'll wind up hitting the fuel cutoff before the shift.
