• Manual launch/ shifting technique?

As far as racing goes I am still not sure on the proper launch technique.

I just read about camaro_zach dropping it at 3000 but I have read elsewere to slip it.

Has either way been PROVEN faster? Personally slipping it FEELS faster to me but it might be the head games.

Also I read that shifting is the key. Basically shift as fast as humanly possible. Also whats the best technique for chirping 2nd and possibly 3rd? Always wanted to do that

Thanks

I launched mine at around 1800 rpm otherwise I'd spin the sh!t out of my tires. But then again, mines a 3.4 so I'm sure I have to launch differently than you. Zach's car is much faster than mine, but my 60 foots 0\/\/n him!

i have NEVER been able to drop it at 3000 and have a good launch except at US41. They spray VHT which is a traction compound. i had the WORST 60's times slipping it out. you HAVE to drop it. you want it to be just shy of bogging. you need to be in your powerband. slipping it will not produce good times. if you are doing it on street tires, heat em up, but dont sit there and smoke them. street tires to not get sticky like nittos. when you spin em and heat em up, they glaze over therefore making them completely wothless. I was doing a 2-3 second burnount, dropped it at 4g and got on the breaks and sat there, then let off the brake and accelerated out of it. then reved to 3k and dropped it, i did spin a TINY bit but any less than 3k and it was bogging too much. It entirely depends on the track conditions and wheter they use vht or not. Also, this 3k dump was done with the centerfoce, im not sure how the stock one will hold up. i was going time and time again and it was sticking each and every time. NEVER ONCE did it slip.

as far as shifting. FAST! like you have never shifted before. when in first and accelerating, HOLD BACK on it towards 2nd, then POP the clutch, and it pops into 2nd then let out. same for 2-3. it is a matter of experince and practice. so just keep at it, you will get faster and faster.

EDIT: 2-3 chirp is thanks to the HARD BITING clutch and the 4.10's. On the way to the track i was practicing launching at this one stop sign, i got sideways as hell in first, eased it into 2nd, sideways through 2nd, then poped 3rd, sideways AGAIN and it FINALY got traction at 5000rpm in 3rd. I love these 4.10's

So what you are saying is the whole time I am accelerating through first to just pull back like I am going to shift into second and when it comes time to shift, press the clutch in and out quickly just enough so it barely makes the shift?

Can I chirp this way too?

to shift FAST.. do it in all one instant.. release the gas at the same time where you let off the clutch and put it in gear.. it should be one very violent action.

The more you put into movement though the longer it will take to shift.. it has to be QUICK.

before your ready to shift... start pulling on the shifter in the direction you need to shift.. just put some tension on it.. then when you are ready to shift, simultaneousely shift and clutch.. I thought you should clutch, shift, and then let the clutch out but that takes too much time.. just do it all at the same time..

It's harder on parts, especially the clutch I'm thinking, but shifting like this is worth a good amount of ET in the 1/4.. no way would we have been able to muster a 14.3 out of zach's car any other way.

Chirping the 2-3 shift if due to keeping the RPMS near the redline during the shift. Let of the gas SO fast that it doesn't have time to drop. You do know that if you are hauling @$$ and you let off the gas, the shifter can be pulled out of the gear very easily without the clutch at all, then breifly hit the clutch and jam it into gear. All this in just an instant.
As for the launch. Dunno. My launch sucks, my suspension sucks, My track sucks, I am currently working on my whole launch because it is killing my times.

with my 3.42's chirping 3rd was impossible. i would power shift 2-3, as in...keep the gas down and just shift, so the rpms WERE at redline...no chirpage.

I somehow managed a small chirp on my best run on the 2-3 shift. I was amazed. Thats probably because our track sucks major ballsack.

Magnus what kind of launch did you guys do in camaro zachs car? How high did you rev it up off the line?

I say rev to 3,000RPM off the line and yes make sure you are pushing the clutch in as you pull it into gear. Same time is key. When I race I dont even take my foot off the gas. But if you do this and shift slow it could be bad.

When my tiresw were knew... and decently new clutch I woudl catch rubberr sometimes in third not too often.

I feather the launch a little and get the car oging and pop the clutch...

I get some sub 2.1 60's

there is no definiet way to do it I have tried one way in the left lane, then tried it in the right lane in spun.... depends on track prep... You have to find where it is on your car... a million and one other things can affect your launch, compared form his car and yours.

at track, dont let off the gas when shifting. Powershifting, whatever you call it. Just gotta hit em hard, just tapping the clutch, and what they were saying about leaning on the shifter works too. Has to be a single simulataneous movement. I also try to kinda rock into 3rd, throw your weight into it. Ive never chirped 3rd though...3.23's I guess dont help.

How much wear and tear will powershifting cause on everything? This is my daily driver too

Still with the stock 3.23s and stock clutch here too...I think my next set of mods will be all drivetrain/transmission.

I've chirped 3rd a few times with my old 3.23's. But it was on an open diff so that's probably why :D

on my 4th clutch
second tranny mount
second driveshaft
second rear end
second transmission(rebuilt)

sooo.... not too good, but to do it occasionally won't kill the car.
