• How do you launch stick?

I need to know by Saturday. Keep in mind I drive an auto, but I can drive stick. When I say I can drive stick I mean I can take off easy and just cruise around town with it...no powershifting or balls to the walls captain insano type shifting.

    OK GET THIS NOW...

I'm going to the Dodge Dealership here because they have a brand new SRT-4 in stock that I'd like to take for a test spin. I'm setting it up where I'm going out for a ride and my friend in his Camaro SS is going to meet me on the road (as if we don't know each other) and he's going to try and start with me. I'm going to tell the dealer so what can this thing do and then attempt to give my buddy a good run. :D So...how to drive it?

You reve the motor to a certain rpm, then either ride the clutch then pop it or jsut pop it.

Hard to tell you have to get a feel, you will not launch that car well... I drive a 3.4L, had my dads 3.8L and couldn't get a decent launch out of it for driving for a day then taking it ot the track. Jsut the power bands were completly different.

Not even sure how hard a Turboed FWD car will feel, hold tight to the steering wheel, when you shift. only advice I can give.

Unless you drive a stick well, or you drive around for an hour practicing hole-shots before you meet your buddy....

Lets just say you are not going to get him off the line. Your best bet would be to roll from 15/20mph and see what you can do from there, if you are wanting to judge the cars performance.

You can try to launch on him, just hope you don't kill it. Also if you hole shot it the sales man may tell you pull over.

I test drove a new RX-7 a few years back, left a light going to get on the highway, got all sideways, grabbed second and hamma down, find third just about the time I am getting on the highway.

This is where the salesman got scared, and he didn't mind telling me so, PULL THE F**K OVER.

Not yet, fourth gear came so did 100mph and a pack of cars in front of me slowed us down. I put it into fifth and started decelerating.

I think he crapped his pants. He wanted to drive back but I wouldn't let him.

        slow and ugly...

I've already had my dad take out a 2000 SS on the lot and I was in the backseat (salesman had to be infront) and he was shifting it w/o the clutch. The dealer guy was like  . Man my dad hammered the **** out of that car...man can he shift.

BTW, I think I'll scratch the hole shot. I'll take him from a roll. The typical FWD type guy's response. I heard turbo lag is minimal and there's is apparantly no torque steer because of equal length drive shafts.

So...how do you shift quickly? When you shift at WOT don't you keep the throttle down partially and/or do you dump or slip the clutch on those shifts?

Its hard to explain. Leaving the line is a lot of feel; kinda like burning, the clutch you have to be right there.

Once rolling it is easy, I apply a little pressure to the stick as the rpms are coming up.
Then when its time to shift, I start pushing the clutch and shifting at the same time.

You don't have to fully disengage the clutch to shift, as your dad showed you it can be fully engaged and you can still shift. I just try to get a little pressure off of it to make sure I get into the next gear.

I also let up on the throttle just to avoid over-revn it.

To totally disengage the clutch takes too long; to totally let off the gas drops the rpms too much, the whole process takes a fraction of a sec.

Without driving one its hard to say. Had you asked how to launch a V6 Camaro I could tell you. But to give you an idea just rev it up so your somewhat in the powerband and dump the clutch. IF you spin to much then rev lower, if you dont spin and bogg then rev higher.

It gonna take a while to get a good launch out of a SRT, alot of FWD power is hard to launch.

To shift fast, jsut shift fast...

not sure the dealre will appreciate powershifting, not sure you shoudl try it in fornt of him until you get some practice with him.

A dealer let me floor it form a light ot 95-100 in $35k trans am

yep a V6 Camaro is the only stick I ever drove. I kinda lied to the guy and told him I drove stick all the time ( ). I took it out and stalled JUST ONCE. I didn't realize you have to slip the clutch until about 10mph or so on a normal/slow takeoff...whoops. Other than that I was driving it like it's nothing. I think I"ve been playing that Ferrari 355F1 game too much...but I gotta say it helped.

I'll take him from a roll or I'll just "joy ride" the car for a bit and screw him.
