removing bumper support for weight reduction..

i have a 97 camaro.. how hard is it and about how long does it take. any tips.. i want to do it today..

Exactly, that is how I did mine.
I just went by his pictures.

Front bumper took 1.5 hours
Rear bumper took 1.5 hours.
I had never removed my bumpers before so I took my time, tried to find all the locations of the bolts, had little lunch breaks, walked around aimlessly.
I spent a total of 3 hours on it and lost 44 lbs approx.
I don't remember the exact numbers but if you do a search you will find them

Does the bumper lose it's integrity if you do this? Will it be as effective if you get in a fender-bender???

Nope it won't be effective, also have a feeling insurance company may use the legality to not pay to fi your car since you compormised the structural integrity of the car without informing them.


I personlaly think its a horrible idea on an everyday driver.

Lets jsut say we are all flawless and never hit another car. I been rearended twice at stoplights, luckily not in my car.

If oyu guys get in a wreck, I wouldn't be surpised if it totals your car.

Sure you lost 44 lbs.

But when you took your jack and spare out did you really notice that big a difference?

And please no one look dumb and say, well I am a hardcore racer I don't need it. Unless you are a track only car(James), I would be weary of doing this. And this is coming form the guy who thought it woudl be a good idea to split a set of cars going 80 on a two lane bridge. And who once was going over 100 on the wrong side of the road and to avoid a head on collision, went, another lane over on the wrong side of the road, then worked his way back ot the right side.

Heck if I could I woudl put a cage in my car.

glad they helped someone. seems to me everytime someone brings up the bumper supports we get the usual group of captian obvious' telling us how its not smart. Go get your window sticker, 5 mph bumpers. man...glad i had thoes when i got rearended at 10 and had frame damage. *fart sound* [img]smile.gif[/img]

Uhm... 5 mph bumpers means they won't get serious cosmetic damage at a 5mph impact, which is true, yesterday, gut bumped me at &lt;10 mph, no apparrent damge maybe some spidering in the futre but what else is new on my rear bumper.

YOu know now all that really stands between you and another car in an accident is sheet metal made to crumple, around a frame or support that is not there anymore.

Go for it if oyu want just when some of the faster guys do something everyone else will try it especially if its free. I just figure they should at least have some info on it.

Yeah the nose and rear does hold its shape.

I DO NOT suggest this for someone who drives it on a regular daily driver car.

I agree, in an accident you are just plain f*cked.

My car is more a track car, with the ability to be driven on the street.

All it takes is one @ss to hit me and I'm screwed!

fyi, i DID get hit at 10 or less, mabye 7, and i DID have frame damage. This is not a mabye or made up situation, this is what happend. so i KNOW you didnt get "bumped" at 10 and had no damage. seriously, thats mother f'ing im possible. honestly. 10mph..seeing as how its ANOTHER CAR that weighs at least 3000 lbs.

And yes james is right, not a mod for a daily driver at all.

I had an intake leak 2k idle, I pulled out of a spot, with a little pep, guy comes around the corner, and bam, no damage, and even today no spidering, and no damage to us.

Maybe you hit a car whose bumper support was not the same hieght as yours.

I got rearended in my GMC JIMMY by a guy in a ranger, my rear bumper went into his grill. His grill, front headlights, front fenders, hood all had damage, and his readiotor was spitting out steam.

My truck, he bent/almost ripped of my license plate, scuffed up the black bumper cover, and bent it downwards a little.

My car recieved some, and I repeat some frame damage onely when it rearended another car at a highspeed, enough to jam the hood into the windsheild and scratch the windshield.

Its more of a money thing [img]smile.gif[/img] , then an autocross thing.

backseat I don't use it at all, infact I leave it unbolted but seatbelts attached. When I drag race I pull it inot the trunk, when I autocross, I lay it down like when you are carryin cargo.

If I yanked the backseat or added a rollcage, it wold up me inot STEET MOD which means jsut about anything goes, engien swaps, turbos, supercharges. Basically a class where a bald crappy street tired, 100% stock motor car will not do well in.

Backseat, yes (dumb, eh?). Roll bar, not so much. Depends if it's bolted or welded and how many points ... just a bar is less trouble than a full cage. I hope to receive no trouble from mine ...
