  • How about 12.87 N/A.....(not mine though)

I know not many (any??) people follow NHRA stock class drag racing, but this was a pretty good run by a guy from Cedar Grove, NJ. He has an 02 Firebird 3.8 and ran a 12.873 (no mph posted) under some pretty strict rules including:
    Minimum wgt 3370lbs
Stock body/full interior (no aftermarket fiberglass, etc)
stock pistons, block, rods, compression, etc.
stock heads and valve size (NO porting)stock rocker ratio.
stock intake (no porting), MAF, no CAI(unless factory)
Cam must be stock lift, but any duration.
Rearend can be any gear and can be a 12 bolt.
Tranny can be a GM 3 or 4 spd (Auto for this class)
    Nine inch wide slick
    Open headers permitted
Not limited to the stock computer (Accel, FAST, Holley, etc).
Pretty impressive given the limitations. I'm guessing he runs a rear gear that would make 4.10's look like highway gears and probably a 200 tranny.

i was just at a NHRA even Saturday and in the class Stock Eliminator (which my dad races in) there was a 01 WS6 ran 9.97.......its the most scientific LS1 out there and it is still considered stock in NHRA regulations!! The owners name is Al Corda if you want to know anything else on this car.

                      Yea....Discussion!

Nino - I'm sure he's not a member, so no timeslip page.

Shortdog - Drop the BS flag my friend. You need to understand the Stock class before throwing a penalty flag.

EVERYBODY - This wasn't a long time ago, just this year. Lloyd MacKay, Cedar Grove, NJ in I/FIA
(I class, fuel injected, automatic). 12.873 at the Checker Schucks Kraegen Nationals.

Shane - What's your dad run?

And the moment you've been waiting for...PROOF

The first jpg has the current listing for best runs in class this year (so far). Look down to I/FIA to see the run I'm talking about. The ET is the third item over (class / class index / Actual ET). The second jpg has the run Shane was talking about for the LS1 car (Under A/FIA)
                      Stat1 - 12.87
                      LS1 car
Check out some of the other Camaro/Firebirds with 305's etc that are listed.

This was most definately NOT a slag on Magnus' times. I think they're great and wish my car was running that number. I just thought it was pretty cool how fast the guy got his to run considering the rule restrictions

Hope this lowers the BS flag.. :D

Serious attention to detail and many $$$ (in some cases). Every part is blueprinted to the Nth degree. Cylinder heads are CC'd and every chamber is identical. Since there's no porting, etc. valves are set higher or lower in the seats if need be to equalize the CC's. The cam has to retain stock lift, but can have any duration. As an example, the old 283 I'm building for the Nova wagon only has .399 lift (less than our 3.8s!) but the cam has 242/252 degrees of duration at .050. It lopes heavy at 1200-1400rpm.
The EFI car can run the new wideband O2s / computers such as FAST, Accel, Holley, etc. These have mucho tuneability - Like having LS1 edit built into your computer. The trannys get light weight internals and sometimes a lower 1st gear and most cars run 4.88 - 5.36 rear gears along with pretty good stall converters. I can't afford all the fast stuff for the Nova I'm building, so I'm just hoping to GET to the index.

                              No worries Nino...

Yep - For all cars legal to run stock, they have a factor assigned to them (Based on car & motor) For the 02 Bird that factor in stock is 15.14. For some motors, the factory HP is adjusted based on class performance, but for this one, the HP factor is 200 (like factory). The H class is 15.00-15.99 lbs per NHRA factored HP. The I class is 16.00-16.99. The class the car fits into with it's standard factor is called it's "natural" class. Cars are allowed to move to the top of the natural class (15.00 in this case) or down one class (16.00). This is accomplished by adding or subtracting weight. Man..this sounds like a lecture or something..
Here's how it all works out for our 02 Bird.

                              To find race weight:
                              15.14 (factor) x 200 (NHRA HP) + 170 (fixed wgt for driver) = 3198 lbs

Move to top of class (15.00) car can lighten up to 3170 lbs (15 x 200 + 170)

                              Drop one class (16.00) car must weight 3370 (16 x 200 + 170).

So the same car can run two classes. All classes have a set et "index". If two cars meet up that are in the same class when they race, it's heads up and the first to the finish line wins. In any other case, it's a bracket type race with dial-ins and break out.

So the Bird can run H/FIA at 3170lbs min with an index of 13.45 or I/FIA at 3370lbs with an index of 13.75

There - all you never wanted to know about stock!

                              Ron
