do you start out in d or od when drag racing? and if you start out in d do you shift into od before the 1/4 is up? if so how far down the track do you wait to shift into od?

I just figured some of the people with 3.73 and 4.10s would have to shift into od with all the other mods but wasnt sure

M5 here and I'm having issues hitting the rev limiter in 3rd b/f the 1/4 with 3.23's. The best I've trapped is 97.02, and suppositely the rev limiter in 3rd is like 99-101.

Actually assuming 1.46 3rd gear, 3.23's, and 245/50-16 tire 97 is where the limiter is. With a 235/55-16 tire you can make 99 b/f you bounce.

                i start in 1st gear.

also i have never hit 5th (the same gear as 4th on an auto) I am in 4th at the end of the track, which is 1:1 just like an auto's 3rd gear. I trap at 98.86 and i still have room to go before i would have to go into 5th (od). Also the hypertech helps me rev higher in each gear therefore letting my 4th go higher than most, but i still dont get past 5500 rpm's with the 410's in 4th. So youd have to be MOVING to worry about hitting OD. I still have 1k+ rpm's left before i run outta gear.

Is 3rd 1.46? Someone gave me the impression that it was in fact 1.34:1. If that is the case, you get a 105mph at 6000rpm in 3rd w/ 3.23's. But if it is 1.46, the your numbers are right

I'm getting that on 235/55R-16's, 4th gear in a 4.10 equiped M5 would be good till almost 114mph, and almost 112 if you ran 245/50's.

i just picked up my car from the mechanic yesterday and we go out on the road. he tells me to drive it around and check it out. we stop and he tells me to do what i would usually do at the track. so i ask him should i flash the converter? he says do what you usually do. so i flash to 2500 and let her rip in drive. [i am not too impressed] he tells me as we slow down that HE would have put it in 1st and launched from there. i told him when i first started drag racing i asked about that and the consensus was that if i wanted to shift i shoulda got a manual.

you can hold 3rd gear to 118 stock you shouldnt be close to that unless you have alot higher gear (4.10 with out a reprogamed pcm) and are on spray

The thing is your car revs real high at wot with an auto, so I mean you might as well let it do the work for you. I leave it in 3 and let it rip.

Thats what most these autos will do, the LT1s aren't but a couple miles more than that before it shifts to fourth.

Hawgs said it. Don't worry about overdrive. No one that is normally aspirated will come close to need shifting into overdrive at the track. Even with 4.10's.

And yes third gear is 1.34:1
