• Battery is no longer in the trunk.... More weight reduction

Ugh, tooooo many damn problems!

I had no problems with a battery in the trunk of my chevelle.

So, initally I had the regular replacement red top optima battery in the bird.
I bought the summit racing battery in trunk relaction kit, flaming river battery cut off switch, and push/ pull handle.

Install was straight foawrd.

When it was done it seemed iffy. It would start perfectly, but then might click once or twice.

This progressed and got worse and worse.

I had full 2 guage wire from the battery to the starter.

I thought..... let me upgrade batteries. I took the BIGGER optima red top from my sable (which was originally in the chevelle) and put it in the bird and took the f body red top and put it in the sable. I figured more cold cranking amps should help right?

Nope!!!

I thought..... stock starter, maybe time to replace/ upgrade it. I called summit racing who refered me to power master after summit tech's had no luck. Power master also had no luck. I was looking for a mini starter with a higher gear ratio to increase cranking ability. No such luck!!! I replaced the factory one with a stock replacement

I then ordered the 1 guage battery wiring kit from summit.

I drove the bird around some more before the 1 guage set up arrived. I would try and start the bird and click click click click and it would get worse and worse. It would eventually start but sometimes it would crank FOREVER!!! It got REALLY embarrassing. At one point I feared for the new starter.

Sooooo, I'm sitting there w/ the 1 guage wire... I NEED full electrical power. There are many times I sit in the lanes with my bottle warmer on and / or fan switch on (fan switch is no longer in the bird though). I also have the bigger fuel pump too! I got sooo damn pissed off today so I relocated the battery to the under the hood stock location.

By the time I removed EVERYTHING relating to the battery in trunk set up I yanked out 12 pounds. I then proceeded to remove another 9 pounds of misc crap (bolts, sound deadening and more)

The bird starts up perfectly on the first crank.

Sigh, battery is now under the hood, I wasted a lot of money doing that mod, I can reuse it all in the chevelle, 21 pounds removed.

12Sec the exact same thing happened to me, I was stumped to the point where I just moved it back. Got really frusterating after 2 weeks + $100's of dollars invested just trying to get it to work.

Yeah, and my Optima did worse in the back then the stock Delco battery.

James,
Just go with a lightweight (get a hawker genesis, don't get a dynabatt or holley -- same darn thing just rebadged! I just bought a small hawker 13Ah for $28 shipped). and mount it in the engine compartment. Any traction gain is lost by all of the weight of the wiring, etc. Figure 40 lb battery, 20 lb wire for the rear-mount, versus a 10.8 lb battery right in the engine.

The long cables are acting like an inductor and it sounds like the stock starter does not appreciate seeing so much inductance on its input.

The simple solution would be to place an offsetting capacitor between the +12Vdc and ground close to the starter.

Give me the length of the cables and the gauge and I'll talk to the guys at work tomorrow to see how big of a cap you'll need.
