• Confused w/ 3.42's

I haven't ran the car since I went from 3.08's to 3.42's. I ran it on Friday asnd pulled some disappointing times, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out on what I am doing wrong or what's wrong with the car.

I don't have the timeslips in front of me, but I pulled a 60' time of 2.2xx to a 14.5 quarter. That is about .2 faster 60' than I ever pulled w/ 3.08's, but it matches my best time ever w/ 3.08's (14.5).

I knew I had more traction in it, so the next run I launched harder and pulled a 2.010 60', to a 14.6 quarter. How is this? I was slower in the quarter by .1, but was .2 faster in the 60'! I don't understand what is going on, I thought I would be a lot faster than this w/ 3.42's.

Can someone give me some tips on how they launch and run there a4's w/ 3.42's and spray? I really need some advice b/c I was thinking that I would be running right at 14.0-14.1. Thanks for any help.

Did you get it reprogrammed? If not, it is probably shifting too soon now... That would affect your et's even though you got through the 60' faster.

With street tires, I brake stalled to about 1800 then mashed it when the light turned. 60'=2.27-2.28

With aftermarket tires, I brake stalled it to about 1400. 60'=2.200

With ET Streets, I just flashed the converter from idle. 60'=1.85

I got it reprogrammed the day after I got the gears installed.

John D, I e-mailed this to you, did you get it?

I pulled a 2.0 w/ street tires. I should have a way better ET, shouldn't I?

What could be wrong? John, what kind of times are you pulling w/ a 2.2 60'?

Can anyone else give me some insight?

The only thing that I could think of is that my foot was not in it as far as it should be for the WOT switch towards the end. I am going to re-adjust it so that it clicks @ about 3/4 or 7/8 WOT, ensuring that it is on.

My PCM is reprogrammed w/ John D's VIN and I have tested the car so that I know it's correct, so that shouldn't be an issue.

My major "DUH" on the reprogramming question... It was late when I replied and I didn't even make the connection...

Did not get an email.

The 2.27-2.28 was on my stock tires (235/55 goodyear at anywhere from 30-36 psi) and I was 15.4 na, and 14.3 with an 85 shot. Same 60' times on both of those runs.

The 85 shot was on 87 octane (faster burn).

When I pulled the 2.001 60' it was on my new 18" wheels and tires (goodyear F1 GS-D3) 245/40 with 35 psi. That was on a 120 shot with 13.8 et.

The 150 shot and ET Streets got me a 13.2 with a 1.85 60' on 93 octane.

How's your timing/knock-retard?
Octane?
Front tire psi?
Engine temp? (fan switch...?)
Weight in the car (subs, full tank, spare, etc...)

1. I don't know. Not even sure how timing/knock retard is measured.
2. 93+108 Octane additive
3. 35 front, 30 rear
4. engine temp was extremely low for the 2.0-14.6 run b/c I sat in staging w/ the engine off for about a 1/2 hour while they cleaned up some debris on the track, plus th motor was already cool. On the 2.2-14.5 run, It was about 160-170. I very rarely hot lap.
5. Half a tank of gas, no spare or jack, no subs>not my cup of tea.

Plus, I just changed my plugs (tr-6's, of course) b/c it has been in the garage sitting for six months. I put about 400 miles on the car in the last couple of weeks b4 I ran it. I wanted to make sure all the seals were good and I didn't have any mechanical problems.

I thought that parking lot mechanics put future mods in their sig.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Or they change alternators in parking lots at autozone, on their way to the track, dammit.

Yes that is correct, I was on my way to the track and my check guages light came on, so I looked down to see my voltage down around 10, so I pulled into Autozone and ended up changing out the alternator in the parking lot. A quick $150 for an alternator, they screwed me, but I had no other choice, I didn't want to kill the battery, too.

Shoulda known that I was gonna run some disappointing times.

Knock retard would be measured with autotap or something like it. If you are running the 85 shot, you are probably ok. My pcm is pulling a lot of timing advance out, with the 150 shot. I think it didn't pull any on the 85 shot.

The 93 may be hurting rather than helping. 89 or 91 would probably be enough. Without a way to see if your knock retard starts going up though, it's hard to say if that's a good move for you or not.

Tire psi sounds ok. Some people run as much as 40 on the fronts. I usually run 32-34 in the stock rear tires. Supposedly stock tires don't hook any better with pressures lower than that, and can slow you down on the top end.

If the engine is too cool, it will still be in open loop, and won't run as strong. The run where it was up around 160-170 would be stronger.

I get good traction with a half-tank, but think I might could go faster with 1/4 tank. Gas is about 8lbs a gallon, so 5 gallons is around 40lbs. Maybe .05 on an et.

I would expect it to have a 14.1x in it, if you can pull another 2.0 60'. With a little more psi, a little less octane, a little less gas, and a cool temp but not too cold.

As far as launching the a4:
I brake stalled to about 1800, on the stock tires and got a 2.24. That's compared to a quick throttle roll with no brake stalling, and getting 2.27-2.28 every time. It was hard to find the right combination to get on the throttle 100% as fast as possible, without spinning too much.

I brake stalled to about 1200 then flashed, on the F1's and got a 2.00. They barely spun.

I flashed from idle on the ET Streets and got 1.8x 60's. If they spun, it wasn't noticeable...

The 3.42's are a little trickier to keep from spinning, but they should definitely be helping you overall (60' and 1/4 mile).

I hooked great, so traction was really not a problem.

I think the problem was the WOT switch. I think that it was initially clicking in, but on the top end I don't think it was staying in b/c of the way I had it setup.

I re-adjusted the WOT switch so that it goes on about 3/4 before wide open.

I really think that it was the problem on the top end.

I would jam it open intially, but I don't think I could keep the switch clicked in the way I had it on there.

I guess we'll see.
