  • second time to the tracks, need tips

Hey everyone, this is the second time that I'll be going to the tracks, and I need some tips on how to drag race with an automatic car. I heard about holding my rpms at 1800 before launch, but what then? Do I punch it when the last yellow light hit or just let go of the brake and slowly push down on the throttle.
Also, I have problems lining up before the race, I can't see the line and I just don't know where to line up, can anyone help? I heard of turning on the heater to cool down the engine, is that a good idea, and do I do that during the race. What other tips are there? Thank you for your input.

Staging Lights: When you line up, watch the lights on the tree. Slowly move forward until the first two lights light up. You don't need to worry about looking at the ground or the other car to line up right.

Heater: While you're in the staging lanes, you could open up your hood to help cool it off, and turn on the heater to help too. I would suggest getting a manual fan switch installed and a 180 or 160 degree thermostat to help cooling. DO NOT race with the heater running. It is a power robbing accessory, and will only hurt your E/T if you leave it on.

Launching: You will need to practice a few times to find your best method. Hold down your brake, and slowly press on the gas as the lights are counting down. Stall as much as you can without spinning the tires. You can probably hit around 2200 RPMS with a stock TC. Once the last light hits, let go of the brake and just put the pedal to the ground. If you have street tires and problems with traction, then you will most likely spin a lot, so you may want to play around with your best launch. Try slowly accelerating followed by a quick WOT.

    Have fun

Thanks for the response Camaro_SLP! I was waiting for some responses in this thread too. I could have asked the same question as John Zang because I just went to the track for my first time last weekend and was looking for some tips on launching for my next time.

I had already gathered from other threads that I needed to rev to 2000 rpm or so before I launched. I will try your advice!

My first time I was getting 2.5 60' times so I think I defintely have room for improvement.

      Thanks!
