  • I'm consistently SLOW!!

My times are getting worse every time I go to the track, but at least I'm keeping them consistent I guess.

All of my runs tonight (aside from 2 throw-away runs, one was following a car blowing it's rear end at the line and throwing oil everywhere, and the other one I had the shifter in 2.... how'd that happen??) are below. I'm VERY pleased with the consistency, but not so much with the ETs and especially not with the 60's.

    Short version:

    12.365 @ 112.76 - 1.937
    12.339 @ 112.96 - 1.933
    12.389 @ 112.73 - 1.961
    12.369 @ 112.85 - 1.947

    Full runs:
wow, that actually worked... Anyway, I just don't understand how I can pull 1.69 60s on the stock suspension, on the same nittos, with the same technique, spinning just the same IN AUGUST, then I put $400 into the suspension and I can't put down any better than a 1.93 60??? I've NEVER heard of anyone doing better with the STOCK control arms than they do with chrome moly ones!?!?!

Now don't get me wrong here, 12.3 is a great time, but by comparison it is not. It HAS run 12.11 on the stock suspension. I SHOULD run 11s on the modified suspension (BMR LCA/SFC, poly trans mount, TA bushing, and rear sway bar bushings). Personally, I think it should have run 11s on the stock suspension, we always expect more out of our own cars I guess. I know, "It was just a bad night at the track." This is my 3rd trip to the track since my suspension mods. They're all the same.

I know what's happening on the launch that's causing this, but I don't know why it's happening. Though I don't know much about auto trannies, my best guess is the TC. When I launch, I come off the line not-so-fast, then about 30 or 40 feet out (maybe more) the RPMs jump and it pulls HARD. It used to just pull hard right off the line. I know I'm spinning on those nittos, but I was spinning before. One might think from my broken up description here that I'm spinning bad off the line, then hooking and going, but that's not what it's doing. While that may be what it looks like, that's not what it FEELS like. Also, I would think that if I was spinning, then suddenly hooked, the RPMs would drop some, or maybe stay the same, but certainly not jump up by 1500. It feels like my old car did when I hit the juice. Anyone have any ideas??

Is the motor bogging off the line? Like something a 2500 or higher stall converter would fix?

Any fuel or tune-up issues, possibly?

The motor doesn't seem to be having the problem. It's very hard to describe (as you can probably tell), but it feels like it's something in the drivetrain. Possibly something to do with the suspension?

You have an awesome sixtie in your sig, yet your recent sixties are quite below your times... You said that you have a converter, and that you suspect it is in the drivetrain... hmmm... Although I am not sure of the likliness of this, it almost sounds like your converter is not engaging right away. That would lead to the lack of power down low, the good power up high, and the jump in RPM, but I am really guessing here.

          -Justin

P.S. Could it possibly be that until you get some RPM's going, the pressure is too low to engage the converter? ((Disclaimer: I am not a drivetrain expert....))

I have a 96 v6 camaro and was wondering if there are boring and stroking kits for 3.8s. if trew dual exhaust 3" would help with power. If i stripped my car completely, lightened fenders battery in the back and all, and almost every mod, from multiple spark to twin turbos; would all of this without nitrous get me into 11s with a trans brake, and sychotic slicks. And would a manual end up having better times as an automatic with a trans brake. Im new to this whole racing thing and want to know as much as someone would mind emailing me. evinrude269@hotmail.com My first run, with crappy takeoff, was a 15.7 I have a shift kit and 8mm wires. o2 simulators and no cat. thats it. compared to other cars thats good. I have 130,000 miles on my engine and my car is can still take on 9 out of 10 rice burners. the one obviously having nos. I have a huge list of my wanted engine, suspension, and weight reduction mods. email me and ill forward you my ideas.

If i had twin turbos would it be logical to think of making a twin mass airflow sensored intake.

That's really strange..... You should be pulling low 1.60's with that verter. Hell, when I used to race I pulled low 1.70s with the baby SY3500 (1.6str) with stock suspension. How many miles on the converter? Maybe its time to have it tuned up.

Also, if you really want to be ripping it up get yourself some ET streets!!!

The converter was rebuilt by Yank before I installed it. It now has less than 5000 miles on it. I don't want to use ETs until I have a 12 bolt. As it is now, my tranny and rear are on borrowed time.
