• rookie questions..

i have zero experience drag racing.. .. heh thought i'd get that out of the way

    ok, so i have a 2000 Camaro 3800 V6 with an A4 tranny..

i was just wondering.. how to drive it.. lol kidding... but i mean how to do stuff like burnouts and the like..

i mean obviously if i floor it off the line i get some tirespin before they grab and i go.. but how do you stay in place and do a burnout for a few seconds? do you hold the break down with the other foot and press the acceleorator? isnt that bad for rear breaks?

definately not the parking break cause i'm pretty sure that locks the rear wheels or whatever..

also, yeah, how do you launch with an automatic.. what i've been doin is just holding the break with the left foot and hovering over the right foot then just releasing the break and then flooring it..

also.. i'm assuming that the car has much better acceleration in Drive rather than overdrive..

    ok, thanks in advance

Power brake, but as little as possible.

When they signal you into the burnout box just hold the brake enough to get the tires started then roll through the box with your foot off the brake, once you get the tires to break loose you shouldn't need to hold the brakes to keep it going for a little. Its up to you if you want do a FULL burnout or just clean your tires up and warm them up. Atco sprays down water or something in the burnout box so I just spin'em a little bit to dry my tires.

As for launched, rev as high as you can, roll your foot on the gas. I manually shift, from 1-2-3.

by power break i assume you mean the brake pedal? ok so i push it down just a little till the wheels start spinnin then let it go? and this isnt bad for the rear breaks? heh, just wonderin

ok, so.. holding down the break pedal i rev as high as i can without spinning the tires then i release the break?

and i always thought manually shifting wasn't any better, that it was a myth really.. correct me if i'm wrong..

---> Yup. Keep in mind, the rear brakes don't receive as much pressure when the pedal is pressed...they'll break loose sooner than the rears. You'll wear them down sooner if you race 10 passes every weekend, but other than that i wouldn't worry about it. You only need to spin them a couple revolutions to remove stones and any water you picked up going around the waterbox. Street tires dont' need preheating like slicks do.

--->You'll never outshift the pcm...why bother trying?

Acceleration in D and OD is no different... the car still starts in 1st, then shifts to 2nd, then to 3rd...and you dont' get to OD with a stock v6 in the 1/4. I put mine in D, but it's mostly from supersition :D

        Have fun at the track!

Ok, first off, it's "brake" not "break" ... little pet peeve of mine ;) .

The first time you go to the track, go to the stands and watch for a few minutes to get the idea of the procedure of things. When you get through the staging lanes and you're directed to the burnout box, go around the water box if possible, then back up to it. If you have street tires, then don't back all the way into the box, stay out of the water. Just give your tires a quick spin to clean them off (hold the brake with your left foot and stomp the gas, then let off the brake as soon as the tire start spinning). You don't need to do any big burnout with street tires, it'll just make them slippery.

As far as manually shifting, let the tranny do it's work, that's what it's made for. Just leave it in drive and go. The tranny can shift itself better than you can.

When staging, slowly move up to the line until you see the top light on the tree light up then stop. This is the Prestage light. Very slowly inch forward until you see the second light come on, then STOP. This is the Stage light. From here you are ready to go. Hold the brake with your left foot and lightly press the gas. You will feel the suspension load down a bit. Hold it there (maybe 1500-2000 rpm). When the tree starts, it will cycle down from the top. 3 yellow lights and then the green. Don't wait for the green, go on the third yellow. For the launch, just let off the brake, stomp the throttle, and hold on. Enjoy!

If the other car gets out of the box first, and the tree is waiting on you, those lights go FAST....I mean fast. It doesn't matter but still dont' be surprised if you line up, and 1 second later it's green.

My car ran better with manual shifting, then again I have a 3rd gen, and I have a v8.

              On shifting an automatic:

It doesn't matter if your hand moves slow, or if your hand moves fast... The transmission will still change gears just as quickly.

All that happens, is either the pcm, or the shifter, sends a signal to the transmission. It takes the same amount of time for the transmission to disengage the clutches, switch gears, and re-engage the clutches, no matter what sent it the signal.

So don't worry about whether the pcm or you can shift gears faster. It's the same...

The only thing you CAN control by working the shifter, is how LATE the transmission shifts. The pcm will shift at a set rpm. If you shift, you may hold it too long, and hit the rev limiter. So from that angle, it's probably better to let the pcm do the shifting.

I keep mine in drive so I have that little bit of extra braking effect at the end of the run. Otherwise when I let off the gas, it would shift into overdrive, and I'd have to brake a little harder. No biggie either way.

Yeah, just a little burnout, on street tires. You can probably get it from just mashing the gas down about 90%, all at once. Let it spin a little and let off. Then you're good to go.
