You don't need a roll cage until you're sub 12s. If you needed a roll cage to run 12's every head/cammed LS1 would need have to have a roll cage...
Congrats shirl, its good to finally see a V6er run 11s

Travis, 6pt is NHRA legal? (I can't find my rule book). Damn, I was gonna go with a 4 point bar from RK Sport with the center cross brace. Would that count as a 6 point bar, do ya think? I like the looks of it the best and right now it is decently priced at 299.00 with no shipping charge if you order it in December.

Actually NHRA legal is a 5-point roll bar (driver's side door bar).
IHRA tracks don't require a roll bar till 11.5 and quicker (too bad NHRA won't change their rules :( ).
camaro_speedemon - Pretty much every heads/cam ls1 does need a roll bar. It's the bolt ons/small camed ones that avoid it by staying 12's .
I think I'll try and get away with that one then...the 4 point..the driver's side bar (with a 5 point)is bs anyway because our cars have side impact beams in the doors.

Yup, it is bs. Actually a rollbar for a car that runs high 11's is bs IMHO. NHRA refuses to change the rule though (already been petitioned). However, if they see you w/o it, they can kick you out. I'd suggest getting maybe a 5 point and not installing the door bar unless they give you a hard time.
FIrst off, congradulations Shirl, I'm just coming back to the board after 3 months out-to-sea and I'm thrilled to see an 11 sec timeslip. It's great that someone finally broke the barrier, and it's even greater the way you did it (N2O + Forced Induction). I had never considered the powerdyne since it never placed high enough in the power-adder rankings; but now...
Anyway to help with roll cages, I did some studying into this for my own future reference and found that Jegs has rather decent ones for our applications.
Here are the part numbers (for those whom search later)

quote:
Originally posted by Shirl: Yeah, thanks Chris... harnesses are required too aren't they? Is it 5 point?

No problem
Hmm, not too sure on that one. My friend ran a cage a while w/o harnesses. The do keep you latched in a lot better. Come to think of it, I do think he said you need them. I know you're supposed to have a racing jacket too. 5 point might not be required, but I'd suggest it over 4. It holds you in snugger and doesn't ride up (I have a 5 point and harness bar for autocrossing).
Yep Shirl, as Chris already mentioned, it's a 5 point bar that is required, and the crossbar on the main hoop is required as well. I'd prefer the 6 point, since 5 is lop-sided. One option is to get the swingout door bars. Not because they swing out, but because you can literrally take them out. Wolfe also sells some caps that you can put over the joints when it's removed to make a nice finished look. Wolf also offers a removeable rear crossbar option, but then it wouldn't be NHRA approved. I think Tbyrne is having 10% off of Wolfe bars.
And BTW Shirl: Congradulations on the times!! That's a killer 60' for the stock converter! I'll be going to the track today with my buddy Mickey ;) so hopefully I can finally hook up and see some 11s too!

My bro just got his cage put in maybe a couple months ago. He has the bars across the doors too, you just pull this pin out and the bar swings out so you can get in the car. I think his is 6 or 8 point, I don't think he did 10.
It might add to the weight of the car, but it can save your life.
My brother almost lost his car, probably his life too, in a street race. He won't do it anymore and got a roll cage put in for when he finally takes it to the track.
Safety first, worry about weight later.
Absolutely!! I almost lost it and hit the wall a few weeks ago when I was racing at the track at night  It's basically the launch that I'm most concerned about because the car goes sideways and gets violent if I don't have real good traction. It's funny because last week I said "wow, it feels good, but I still wanna go faster"..it's like a drug or an addiction...you want more of it. The more you race, the faster you wanna go. The first time I take the car back to the track again in the Spring, I know the first run will have my adrenaline flowing...bigtime..and that's why I think it should have a bar..not necessarily because of the rule. Hell, they haven't hassled me yet at the track and it ran 11.8 and 11.9. I'm thinking maybe they don't know because I have black tinted windows...or because it was the end of the season. Who knows..but I always told myself..if and when this thing goes 11's it'll deserve to have a bar or cage.
