  • How do I improve then 2nd 1/8 mile?

Was thinking I would be closer to 15.0.

I have a '01 convertible A4, 3.42-open. If its not mentioned, its stock: Raised airbox, !baffles, !MAF screen, whisper lid/KN, 3/8" TB spacer, Taylor 8mm wires, NGK plugs, 160 thermo, manual fan (off during run), 3" catco/cat back/dynomax 3"in/dual 2.5" out muffler, !spare/jack, !back seat. Tire pressure was 35 in front, 28 in rear.

    Temp 75, humidity 70-80%, elevation 25ft.

rt N/A (but it was .632)
    60' 2.079
    330' 6.258
    1/8 9.708
    mph 71.57
    1000' 12.702
    1/4 15.25
    mph 87.87

Is it just time for nitrous, or is there something else I can do to improve 2nd/3rd gear pull/top end?

With a 60' like that, and only an et / mph like that ... something is off.

maybe the convertible's weight is just too much for lousy 3800II top end?

like wicked said, with a 2.0 60' you should be in the 14s

I thought so too. Its always been like that, even baselining before mods, pulled like crazy off the line then falls flat on her face. I thought the exhaust would fix that problem, appearantly it did not.

the second half of the track is about horse power for the most part. you can make up a good amount of ground et with soem gear, but between teh 1/8 and the 1/4 traps is mostly about hp.
you can make up some ground by doing weight reduction work as well sinc etrap speeds are a result of your power to weigth ratio.

its a convertible, its gonna run a little slower than a hard top with those mods. That is one helluva '60 with that et though....I ran that kind of '60 with a 15.4 one time, now I run 15.3-15.4 with 2.2 '60s, it may have been bad air, humididity or something....

A headwind would explain it.... or maybe a 3rd gear that is a .5 ratio? I have no idea though...

Going to run open throttle bottle Wednesday night (if no rain) and see if its just lack of air, if not then going to try desensitizing the knock sensors, for the next time out, maybe Im getting some high rpm false knock thats retarding timing. Wish I had Autotap...

what year is your car? running open TB might do more harm than good for two reasons:

                  1. running on hot air from radiator
                  2. taking in too much air might confuse the computer and make you run pig rich

but, it never hurts to try. :D

2001, can reset PCM. By the time I get to the 1/8 mile the hot air should be mostly blown out of the engine bay, Mustangeater has mentioned this in his posts about open TB. Im not above Home Depot CAI/pantyhose at the track either.

On my friend's '02 he actually lost 1-1.5 mph by running open MAF. You shoud look into the SLP underchin ram air. It's good for 1.5-2 mph increase in trap speeds - noticable gain in your top end power.

I was surprised no one mentioned this before and was starting to think the SLP CAI was crap and doesn't make a difference.

As an experiment, I am going to run 3" dryer hose down to the driver's side fog light hole and put pantyhose on the end to catch bugs next time out to see if air is the problem. I don't have any real sharp bends in the mock up, so It should be good for some gain.
