If a dealership will flash your PCM for a gear upgrade to 3.42, you will need a VIN# from a V6 car with a Y87 package. The Y87 package came with the 3.42 gears. The dealership will need that VIN number to put into the computer to reprogram your PCM. That way the car will know you have 3.42 gears thus making your odometer and speedometer read correctly.

thanks for all of the help... iver heard so many things.. many people say reprogramming wont do anything, some say it isnt necessary. anyone know for sure?
The only thing I can tell you is that I have an A4 and I did the 3.08->3.42 swap and prior to getting my computer reprogrammed by Wester's my car was SLLOOOWWWW. It sounded like it was revving like crazy but just not going anywhere. The computer just plain didn't like the gears. It wasn't even shift points, it just plain didn't like it.

I can't speak for every car because I haven't heard everyone complain about the same thing I experienced. However, I am just letting you know what happened with my car.

I would highly recommend having some sort of reprogramming set up very shortly after you swap gears in an A4.
