Try replacing the fluid and see how it responds. While you have the cover off, you can take a look at the gears for anything obvious. Mine whined horribly when I first put them in, but after a fluid change they were fine.

Started out around 3450 lbs
Best weight now is 2900 lbs
As for the rear, I have a T/A girdle and stud kit and run synthetic rear diff lube. I change it every year. I grenaded 3 LSD units in 3 years and 1 axle and I'm an AUTO! I run a powertrax locker diff now.Race car - gone but not forgotten - 1997 firebird V6

the fluid thats in the rear has less than 1k on it, its Castrol Syntec synthetic gear oil. Last time i had the cover off they looked good BUT they didnt whine then.
