street tires in the water box?

  • street tires in the water box?

    i never really looked before and now the track is closed...all the people with real drag radials im sure burn out right in the water box...what about with a fat set of streets?...do you use the water box to burn out?...i usually just burn out right after it...tryin to nail the traction [img]smile.gif[/img]

    If it has basically any tread what so ever, its gonna kick water up into your fender well and the waters going to drip down onto your tire while your going down the track. If I were you I reccomend going around the waterbox. I wish most FWD vehicles would take this advice as well...

    Just my two cents.

      1. You shouldn't be burning out with street tires.

      2. Burning out in the water box does not heat up the tires. B/c w/ every revolution of the tire water cools it. Not to mention the forementioned water issue.

      Ideally with street tires you drive around the water box. Spin them over once or twice to clean the tires off. Then Stage.

        ^^^yeah thats what i usually do...i dont really get a good "burn out"...but i do go around it...just wanted to be sure i was doing it the best way

        Seppo...btw...this is off topic but...i was checking out your page...my gears go in wednesday...and im looking at getting the same cam you have...otherwise i have a similar setup...intake, suspension, exhaust...should i get the manifolds too or should i see a nice gain without them?...also...how well do you think nitrous would work with this cam (75 - 100 shot)...any info you could give would be a big help...thanks [img]smile.gif[/img]

          I have BFG Drag Radials and I drive though the water box, and do my burnout.

            with really wide front tires you're probably hurting yourself, not to mention others by carrying all that water to the starting line. It would be a lot better if you went around the water then backed into it to do your burnout.

            Like Seppo said, street tires dont need a burnout. The compound of the rubber just gets greasy instead of stickier. Just clean them off and stage.

              Seppo and Wicked nailed it! If you drive straight through, you negate any good you do with the burnout by making them drive through other water before the start line.

              Also, street tires get greasy when burnt out, not sticky! For street tires, skip the water box, and just spin them nice to knock off any rocks. On a 5 speed you can do this by just rvving, and dropping the clutch...You only need one revelation of the tires to clean them off, so no need to get crazy!

                You should be fine with the GT cam on the spray. Also I picked up a good 10 rwhp when I added headers. I think that is what you are asking
                about.

                  sweeeeet...thanks guys...yeah i give em a couple spins outside the box...then i come home with that black sh*t all over the back of my arctic white car lol

                  Seppo...wow you picked up 10 with the headers??...i've heard that with a cam you get a lot more out of your intake/exhaust...thats why i was thinking of getting the ported intake manifolds too...im gonna see how she does on the cam and spray first...thanks! [img]smile.gif[/img]

                    On my michelin XGT V 255 50 16 street tires I lowered the psi to 28, rolled around the water box, gave a quick snap of the rear tire to clear them off and then let loose!

                    Now, with my nitto extreme drag radials, bf goodrich drag radials, mickey thompson et streets I roll through the the water box and just a slight snap of the rear tires, NOT SPIN/FLOOR IT!

                    Each tire, depending on N/A vs nitrous, required different styles of burn outs.

                    Nitto 245 50 16:
                    LONG burn out, spin till there is smoke, once smoking wait 7-8 seconds

                    BF 255 50 16:
                    Medium burn out, spin till there is smoke, once smoking 4-5 seconds

                    ET street 26 X 10.5 X 16
                    Medium burn out, spin till there is smoke, once smoking 6-8+ seconds depending on track conditions, psi etc

                    If you SPIN/FLOOR it water spins up into the wheel well and after your burn out the water will drip down and you will SPIN BAD off the line.

                        Well, if your car is a truely daily driver and you MUST drive in the now then look ONLY at a radial tire, drag radials are out of the question.

                        If this is a car that MIGHT be FORCED to drive through snow once or twice but normally no, then nitto extreme drag radial

                          yeah thats the problem...its my ONLY car...right now i have 245/40/18 712s on (i'll be putting my rear snow wheels/tires on shortly)...im looking at going 285/40/18...can i do that on front and back?...or could i only do just the back?

                            as for prepping for the launch.. I drive around the box, back up to the edge of it, drop the clutch around 3500 spin forward stop, back up a little, kinda give it a hard launch to get an idea how the track is feeling if I slip easy or it grips, then line up and launch.
