  • Who Should Win?

Hello, I've heard rumors that a '96 Camaro RS can beat some older V8 Camaro's. Is that true? My friend has a '83 Z28 and I was wondering who would win at a quarter mile drag? Both are totally stock.
    Thanks for any info!

    the 96 camaro would win. I have a 96 3.8. stock is 200 hp. a 83 Z only had 190 hp stock.

I've owned both cars.. well actually an 82' Z28 and the 96' RS I've had for 9 years now. The 82/83 is a 305 which sounds real nice but then again, so does a 3.8 with a 3" catback.. ;) 305 has 190 hp but has like 265 tq. or so. 3.8 has 200hp and 225 tq. I loved my 82' and wished I hadn't gotten rid of it, but I almost got killed in it twice. I bought a 3.4 and it was DEFINATELY A LOT slower, so I was pissed off that I made that purchase (no offense to anyone with that motor). Got rid of it for the 3.8 and that was more up to par. It's hard to say which one is faster, but I "think" the 3.8 should be able to pull on an 83'. Only sure way to find out is to take em' both to the track and let us know how ya do!!!

yeah, the older V8s are slow stock. A stock V6 with a good driver will beat an older V8 any day. My car was running with Mustang GTs with minimal work back when I was runningn mid to low 14s.

you have to remember that you lose 15% of you hp getting to your wheels. from my engine i'm pushing out 373 hp, but only getting 311 to my rear wheels.

Another thing to think about, is the better (lighter?) driveline components of the newer cars compared to the older cars.

Power brake it and bring the RPM's up to like 2 grand. Then take off like a bat outta hell. Does the trick every time! (that is.. if you have an A4).

That will not be a factor. You would be surprised as to how many of the suspension/drivetrain parts are the same from the 3rd gens to the 4th gens.

honestly it will probably be the same if not to the advantage of the 3rd gen.

                          I assume this guy is running a 460Le and the 3rd gen a TH700r4?

about the same, both running steel driveshafts that are so the same they could swap them.

Same 10-bolts just the 3rd gen one is like 2 in. narrower.

but the 3rd gen will likely be on 15s, maybe even 14s while the 4th gen will be rolling on 16s or bigger.

If anything the 3rd gen has the advantage there, even though its minute.

Which 305 does it have - the 4bbl, 4bbl HO, or Crossfire? Also what gears? During different years you could get anything from 2.73 to 3.73 stock in a third gen.

In any case, you have a HP advantage, but the thirdgen has more tq. and prolly a little less weight.
