• Questions from a newbie

Hello all. I've been wanting to run my car at the track for a while and get a timeslip. I think I'm finally gonna go to a Test & Tune this Saturday at Gainesville Raceway.

I've been digging through a lot of the "first time at the track" posts and get the general gist of it, but since this is going to be my first time, I still have some questions:

1.) What is the general process? Pay first, tech inspection(if applicable), and then waiting in the staging lanes?

2.) How exactly does the tech inspection work? In other words, what are they supposed to be checking on your car? Does having a SES light on mean you can't run?

3.) How exactly does the tree and the staging lights work? When it's my turn to go, I creep up and wait for a first light to come on? Then creep up a little but more and wait for the second light? That means I'm in position and ready? And then when the other guy is also ready, we go on green light(although RT doesn't really count for a test & tune)? Once it gets to green, that means you can go anytime right? I've heard people say to go on the third yellow, but can you get a red light if you go too soon?

4.) Where exactly is the end of the 1/4? Is it indicated anywhere near the end of the track? I kinda want to know when to hit the brakes.

5.) OK, when I'm done, I turn off somewhere on the track & pick up the slip and from there I can go back in line or leave?

6.) If there's a long line, I should probably turn off the engine while waiting?

7.) Are there any other rules I should know about? I'm definitely putting my windows up while actually racing, but am I allowed to have them down while waiting? I don't want to use the AC and the car might be off while waiting anyways.

8.) Is there a certain dress code? Like long pants required? I know my car is gonna be much slower than 13.99 so I guess a helmet is not required, but definitely recommended?

9.) For a test & tune, do they wait for both guys to get ready, or do they just start the tree on the side of the that guy is already staged?

10.) Do you have to do a dial-in for a test & tune? If so, how's that done. You get a few runs or "guestimate" your fastest ET?

Whew! A long list of questions, I know. I figure the more I get right here, the more I can actually concentrate on throttle control at the race.

Now, some info about my car. It's a slow & heavy chevy with a 3.08 open diff automatic 3.8L V6 convertible(over 3600 lbs, and I weigh about 160 lbs). I'll probably run 16's my first few tries...I'll be very happy if I can break 15's before I leave. It's pretty much stock. All I have is a whisper lid, holley filter, strut tower brace, and dynomax muffler....in other words, nothing you can really feel in added horsepower. I'll probably remove the spare tire & jack and will probably have less than half a tank of gas in it by the time I get to the track. I plan to drive around the burnout box/water... I only have street tires and I'm hoping to save some life on them. As for launching the car...I really don't want to...isn't it hard on the tranny? I use this car as a daily driver and sort of want it to last for a while. I'll probably have left foot on brake and right foot resting on the accelerator getting ready go.

I think that's it for now...sorry for the long read, but I'd appreciate any suggestions for a newb like me. Thanks!

Yes, I know \"Artic\" should be spelled \"Arctic\". Can any of the mods change this?

1- pretty much
2- couldnt tell ya my track doesnt do them
3- sounds about right. red lighting on t&t nights doesnt mean anything
4- it should be marked
5- your choice you can go wait to run again, sit and let the car cool, or leave if ya want.
6-yes - take a bag of ice to cool down the intake mani faster.
7- there shouldnt be a problem with windows up or down i keep mine cracked at night due to moisture.
8- there shouldnt be for you since your car will hit 15s at best. some tracks require helmets, some dont unless under 13 or 12 second ets.
9- yes they wait.
10-not to my knowledge. dialing in is for bracket racing.

make sure you spin your tires a little after you go around the burnout box to clean them off. dont worry about the other car out there, worry about yours theres nothing on the line if you dont finish first(even though winning is alot more fun)
practice makes perfect. the first time out is always the toughest, i was so f'n nervous my first time. after that first run you'll settle down though.

keep in mind that the 60 foot time is the most important part of all. the better the 60s are the better your times will be.

Well, I got back from the track. I was pretty happy with the results. My best run actually turned out to be my first(15.886 @ 84.92mph). My timeslip can be viewed here. I know my reaction time could definitely use some work as well as a few other things, but it was a test & tune and my first time. The main thing I was concerned about was breaking 15's. I guess this wasn't bad considering my car is basically a stock 3600+ lb convertible, has 3.08 gears with an open differential, and is an automatic. I would definitely like to improve my times and this experience just makes me want to get a faster car! I was nervous that first run, but man, at the same time, it was a great rush.

Oh, two more things. One concerns the timeslips page. If I want to add mine, do I click the link on the top of the page, or go to the sticky "Timeslips page" post in the Drag Racing forum and submit it through one of the member pages there? The second thing is, I have some rubber on my quarter panels and wheel well(see my post here). I've already tried bug & tar remover and good old fashioned elbow grease, but it won't come off. I spent a good amount of time scrubbing it this afternoon and it won't seem to come off. I wasn't planning on spinning the tires, but on one of the lanes, there was no way I could avoid the water box. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks again.

not bad for your first time out with a basically stock car ..i would work on getting that 60' down to at least a 2.1 ..as far as the timeslips page..i wouldnt bother..it hasnt been up for as long as i can remember..the rubber on your car will eventually come off..i know its a pain but it just takes some time..as far as the water box goes..if theres absolutely no way around it..then you really have no choice i guess..just slowly drive through it so you dont splash any water up into the wheel well..and dont spin your tires in or after the water box..street tires are designed to have traction at a colder temp..they do not need to be heated like drag radials..idealy what you want to do with street tires is go around the water box..give them just a quick snap of a spin to clean them off..and then pull up to the line

Thanks, I'm definitely gonna work on getting that time down.

1DangerousV6, do you mean the rubber eventually comes off if I keep scrubbin'(a lot) or it'll eventually come off if I just leave it there and uh, let it get weathered?

yeah i would scrub and spray off as much as i could..the rest of it just came off over time..i havent been to the track in a bit and now my car is spotless..if you need to get it off quick you can try a flat razor..thats what i use to get graphics and decals off..you just need to be REALLY careful about the paint

Heh, yeah...that was my roommate. He brought his Toyota Tacoma for the heck of it. Totally stock(I4)...his best time was 17.98 @ 73.50 mph. Dunno how much horsepower it has, but I imagine not much...he got the truck for under $10,000 brand new.
