  • Suggestions Please, rear wheel setup

    ok,

Right now I run 4 chrome Z06 rims with 275/40 - 17 tires. These are heavy as ****, something like 53 lbs per rim, whereas the stock ones are only like 19.5 lbs. When these are on, I can barely chirp 2nd even with all my mods including 4.10s.

I am tempted to put all 4 of my salad shooters on and put mickey thompson drag radials in the back. Would that be to much weight reduction in the back though? I dont wanna spin off the line but hook

Another option is to leave the chrome Z06s on in the back with the 275/40 tires and just put the salad shooters up front. I would only do that though if I needed the extra weight in the back.

What do you guys suggest I do?

            salad shooters for the track...

I always ran a lighter stock wheel at the track, zr1s even being factory originals and lighter then replicas were still heavy as hell.

                thanx guys,

So if no one else has any comments i think im gonna go get the MT to put on salad shooters. I believe 12secondv6 was using the size 26x11.5x16 for the MT. Is that the best size to fit the rim?

those are the ET streets.... i don't think they are made for 16 inch rims and those need tubes also... you will need the drag lights with those...

you need the 255/60(or 50?)-16 MT et DRAG radials

let me put it this way....

with my street tires i could not floor my uner 50 MPH or the tires would break loose and make things scary...

now i can floor it whenever i want cold tires/road or what not and it dont even try to get fishy on me

i also know a 800 RWHP supra not having any problems on the street with the same tire

part of the weight issue is the rim, part of it is the tire. Our stock rims are about 19.8 lbs. a piece, plus the weight of the tire. the sidewall of the tire doesn't have a lot of rubber, but the tread does. our rims are designed to handle up to a 255-50-16 tire. 275 width tires add almost an inch worth of rubber on the circumference of the tire when compared to the 255's. tire rack has forged 18x9.5 rims that weight 1-2 lbs. less per rim than our stock 16x8's. you'll always have to eat the extra weight the rubber adds. or you can get a set of drag radials for just the track and deal with it on the street.

I would suggest the MT drag radials (I've never used them, but heard nothing but good things about them) on either salad shooters or 15x8 weld wheels (depending on how much you want to spend; the latter being the better/more expensive option). Then I would go with salad shooters up front or if you're really looking to save some weight, 15x3.5 or 15x4 weld wheels in the front with the cheapest tire you can put on that rim. To go even lighter, you could put front-runners (tires) on the front, but don't even think about driving on the street with those.

You asked me in another thread about where to get weld wheels, I'll answer it here.
I have a 15x8 wheel on the back and a 15x3.5 in the front, like these from Jegs

Like I said above, I would recommend MT drag radials on the back. When I had drag radials on my 15x8 Weld wheels, I ran a 275/50/15. On the front I have the cheapest 165R15 tire I could find. I paid about $70 for the pair mounted and balanced if I remember right. If you're interrested in front-runners, Jegs has those too.

i suggest getting 3rd gen firebird base wheels. the 15inch fans fit with no spacers or anything needed. drop a set of 235/60-15 BFG or M/T dr's on there and you will be good to go.
