Usually shifting just before redline is most effective. The power curve does dip towards the redline, but the idea is to keep the engine in the power band for the longest amount of time. My shiftlight is set to 5600 and I get it out of gear around 5800.

If I could get fuel I'd take mine to 6200. But i usually shift around 5900. It doesnt make a difference in my car.2001 V6 Camaro - VTEC Badged, Abbott Racing Heads Sticker, and Loud A$$ Exhaust

BUILT NOT BOUGHT

14.0 @ 96.44 MPH (Street Tires, Before Tranny)

http://members.cardomain.com/6pakcamaro54

I noticed when i shift at 5000 rpm going into 2nd i break traction for about a second(havent got limited slip yet). But when i shift higher like 5300-6000 it doesnt usually break traction. Does this mean 5000 is the most efficient shifting point for me in first? All the rest of my gears feel best shifting around 5800.

If you shift at 5k, the tires slow down so much that you'll chirp 2nd. If you run it out to redline, the wheels are moving so fast, they don't have the opportunity to chirp. Few people realize that chirping shifts slows you down. But sometimes I like to make a show, so I'll grannyshift at a low RPM and light up the tires into 2nd or 3rd.

The old racers say, 500 rpm above your peak torque.
Dyno it and try it.
