• BMW CCA Event 4

Well after a long time of waiting I finally made it to my first AutoX, which happened to be event 4 of the local BMW club's season (they run two courses, 1 for BMW's and another for non-bmw's)

It was a beautiful day to hit the track. There were a number of no-shows, so everyone got 8 runs. I did ok, it was my first time so I didn't have very high expectations.

MORNING SESSION
Run1 - 82.050 (My first run was just to learn the course)
Run 2 - DNF (dashed line on the map in corner 2, thats what I did, D'OH!)
Run 3 - 72.846 + 1 (I hit a cone in the slalom in corner 1)
Run 4 - 67.517 (felt good and smooth)

AFTERNOON SESSION
Run 5 - 68.038 (I guess the tires were cold?)
Run 6 - 64.321
Run 7 - 63.367 (My best time )
Run 8 - 62.431 + 1 (another cone in corner 1 same place, but still a great run)

Course Layout

All in all I think I did pretty good. I was getting some squeeling from the rear end the last few runs, I guess my lower control arm bolts were backing off a little, need to fix that tomorrow.

The best times were in the low 50's and the average was probably 57 seconds. I still have a lot to learn, but damn it was fun. There was a fine F-body showing. There was a 96 Z28 in the 54-55 second range(1LE everything and racing slicks)

By next event I should have the 1LE sway bars in, hopfully they'll help out. Once they update the club web page I'll post the official results.

Well its official, I suck

At least I placed last instead of DNF'n. Looks like I'm gonna need a lot more practice...and maybe some nice wheels and tires :D

Of course they "missplaced" my best time, but it would not have helped my standing anyway. The next event is on Sunday, hopefully I woun't come in last place ;)

You don't suck. Guys who are actually putting out the effort to go racing never suck.

I was watching the Formula Vee race in my driving suit once, waiting for my race. As usual there was some poor soul in a bad car (all he could afford, no doubt) circulating in a distant last place. Some yahoos in the seats in front of me were pointing and snickering. I tapped one of them on the shoulder and said "He's down there. You're up here. That's all I need to know." They shut up :D .

And you did beat two people. It counts. I beat Chip Gnassi in my Formula Ford once - he got disqualified.

Things will get better. Remember, slow in, fast out.

"He's down there. You're up here. That's all I need to know."

Thats exactly right 2 up...by the way what type of suspension do you have now? I don't have the $$ to do it now but was curious as to what it takes to run.

thanks for the support guys. I have my next event tomorrow. I'll make sure to do a lot better

As for my setup, right now I've got 1LE springs, Bilstein HD shocks, 1LE control arms/panhard rod and upgraded brakes. I think the biggest problem at the moment are my tires. I'm going to bring some chalk with me tomorrow. I may have had the tire pressure a bit to high, guess I was a little scared the tires were gonna roll. I also could use some sway bars to balance out the car. Our cars tend to understeer stock, and the 1LE springs only make it worse.

I'll let you know how I did tomorrow night

Event 5

This was a bit more challenging of a course, but it was still a lot of fun. They decided to end early, so unfortunatly we only got morning runs. The two groups were not divided evenly, so while I only had to work for an hour and a half in the morning, the other group got stuck out in the hot sun for almost 3.

I brought chalk this time to see how my tires were wearing. Got the fronts down to 37psi and the rears to 35 which helped a great deal. (I ran 42 front and rear last event)

Course Layout
Run1 - 69.325
Run2 - 66.104
Run3 - 65.206 + 1 (no idea were I hit this cone)
Run4 - 64.161 + 4 (yea, lets just say I plowed through the chicago box at the end )

My times were pretty average this time. Most people I talked with in my class had a best time in the 63-64 range. Hopfully I'll post pics when I get them from my friend.

There yah go tear em all up! Its amazing how much difference a few pounds of pressure can make!

I am very unfamiliar with Autocross so bear with me here...if you hit a cone does it automatically add one second?

What type of cars do most people run with anyway? Not bad for your second run there...plan anymore trips through?

blue95, they add 2 seconds for every cone :(
