I was watching Monster Garage the other day and they were building an open-road race car. I know you guys probably know all about this but there are events across the country where large sections of roads are closed off, sometimes over 100 miles and you drive as fast as you can through this section. I think this would be an awesome thing to do. Ive never been involved in any road racing type of event (legally) and i would really like to try something like this. My question is are there any events like this close to Ohio and what all safety recquirements are involved?
the cannon ball run ...its a cross country race from coast to coast..i think theres a movie about it..and i heard something about it being done again this summer..BS or not i dunno..but i know it used to happen..but i do NOT street race anymore..and do NOT suggest it..hearing that exhaust rip through the pipes at WOT on an open road is great..but not worth hearing the sound of a cell door go *SLAM* ..besides..i can hear it at the track anyway :D
The cannon ball Does happen although it is now called the Gumball 3000. There was a documentary about it on PPV a few years ago. thats some crazy stuff
however, what im talking about is legal. sections of road are shut off and you can legally drive as fast as you can on public roads. Anyone who saw that episode of Monster Garage knows what im talking about
That open road race is out in Nevada. A few LS1Tech guys do it. You could also check out the ECTA -- it's land speed racing in NC.
Other than those two "high speed ones", and drag racing, you'd be best getting involved with the SCCA, NASA, etc. But not the cannonball run.
haha no way would i do the cannonball
i wonder if nebody else saw that on PPV
it was insane!
There were ferrari and porsches doing between 180-200 on the freeway!!!
cops set up road blocks and while they had one car pulled over about 50 others went flying by doing about 140!
i wish i would have recorded that

thanks alot
Most of the Open Road events are out 'west' where the roads are more 'open'...
There is also the Big Bend Open Road Race which is just as good as the Silver State Classic, but better because it's in Texas...
I plan on doing the Big Bend one either in October or early 2006, whenever I have a few more track days under my belt after the camaro is up to spec.

little searching and I finally found their site. guess I heard wrong. but to me it looks like a simple 1.9 mile top speed run, not anything like road racing
